    OK, so they burn cars.

Now, tell me how many people were killed in the French "riots", and how many people were killed during the 1992 LA riots

Dammit, bub, you beat me to it.

I was also going to mention the times when it was legal to hang a man for sleeping with a woman of a different skin color, or for being out after dark with the wrong skin color, or for opening his mouth to a man of a different skin color.

And that's just a few choice samples from our last 50 or so years.

    Civilized.

I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.

It's a dumb tradition. So what? People have insurance, car manufacturers get a bit more business and so do car salesmen.

Europe is full of weird traditions that look retarded to outsiders. How about the running with bulls in Spain? People actually die in those. Or the tomato fights during the Tomatina; or the eggs and flour fights that leave the city streets a freaking mess.

It's not about being civilized. It's about letting your hair down and doing retarded ****. You know, like you guys do on Spring Break.

Funny how some people are very keen on using deaths based on excess mortality when talking about French natural disasters but refuse to admit its relevance or even existance when talking about the effects of the Iraq war...

    2 v. 53.

If the 1992 riots happened every single year like clockwork, you might have more of a point. They were an exceptional event that was absolutely abhorrent.

Again, my surprise here is not that people rioted - it's that people riot every year, everyone knows it's going to happen, and nobody does anything about it. If we had riots like that every single year, I'd be disgusted at that.

In the Spring Break, Spain, and Tomatina examples, the crowds are not going out and destroying valuable property belonging to thousands of innocent people. Also, did you honestly just analogize getting drunk on spring break to rioting and committing arson?

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Where were these riots you keep banging on about? There is no mention of riots in the OP. 1,000 cars get set alight all over a country the size of Texas. That's thinly spread, not a riot.

Yeah, I did. Because it's the same stupid mindset at work. Humans doing stupid things when they think they have an excuse to do so. The majority of spring breakers won't get into trouble, just like the majority of French people can party without burning cars. Unfortunately others will do dangerous or illegal things, like slipping a date rape drug in their hot friend's drink or burning the neighbor's car. How do you expect to fix random behavior like this? A cop behind every spring breaker? A horde of cops on every single French street on New Year's Eve? Impossible. Warning people of what could potentially happen and hoping for the best is really the only thing that can be done.

I think this occurs more than we may think. I remember articles a few years ago where the ghetto's in France had a few weeks of car burnings which largely were the underclass Muslims forced to live in those ghetto's --- I sort of assumed that was a rather frequent occurrence.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.
