CBC News - Canada - Carry-on baggage subject to strict new rules

Article said:
Canadian airline passengers are barred from bringing any carry-on luggage aboard U.S.-bound flights, with some key exceptions, under new security rules announced Monday.

Transport Canada decreed the new airport security measures — which take effect immediately — in a statement Monday evening. They include a prohibition on bringing baggage aboard the cabin of any flight bound for the United States, with certain exceptions:

Medication or medical devices, including crutches, canes, walkers and containers carrying life-sustaining items.

Small purses.

Cameras.

Coats.

Items for care of infants.

Laptop computers

Musical instruments.

Diplomatic or consular bags.

Other special needs items.

...

Air Canada has also decided that once airborne, passengers will not be allowed to leave their seats for one hour before landing.

Glad I'm not flying to the U.S. anytime soon. It was already difficult to fly through American airspace before, even for connecting flights, but now this. I don't see how this knee-jerk reaction is going to really prevent anything. The act already happened.

My question is... why is security in North America being increased so drastically when the passenger came from Amsterdam? Shouldn't our governments be putting pressure on the departure countries too? I haven't heard any statements put out by the Netherlands about this.

Furthermore, why is Canada being hit with these restrictions when terrorist acts have never originated from our country?

Let's recall some facts about the Nigerian:
- paid cash
- one-way ticket
- Nigerian citizen
- had recently traveled to Yemen
- was on a list

Red flag anyone?

Maybe we shouldn't be hassling every day people with more security measures, and hassle our authorities instead? They were the ones who messed up, not us.

I still have not forgotten the case of the man who boarded a flight with a monkey under his hat, they did check his shoes and belt though:lol:

We Americans are a paranoid bunch, ain't we? I refuse to fly with these idiotic restrictions in place. Bad news for my travel agent.

I think that man was Dick Cheney and the guest under his hat was Bush ;)

I'm glad about this. I am so sick and tired of people bringing on so much carry-on baggage that there is no room in the overhead compartment for my bag. I fly with one bag only, and I don't like it taking up my leg room.

I really have to wonder who runs the TSA. Are they conniving politicians who implement these absurd measures in order to show they are "protecting America"? Or are they complete morons who actually believe this is real security?

Those new restrictions just took your one bag away. Now you get to check it through and have fun retrieving it from baggage claim.

relatively close Rabbi, but not close enough, he would always smuggle the dick licker onto a plane in his underpants, so as not to give those north Vietnamese long range tactical nuclear dickshaw bombers a target, it was a trick Dubya learned defending the skies of Texas against them.;)

I to fly with only one bag, and if I was sitting next to you it would be full to bursting:)

I think they believe the public are the morons, if you read the thread about arming pilots you may conclude they have a point:)

LOL

Gotta give Bush credit; Texas is free thanks to him. If it weren't for his brave service, Texans would now be speaking Spanish.

or Vietnamese, all hail Dubya, the bravest man ever to get pissed as a rat, Hip Hip deathray:)

I actually heard a member of the public [on a news channel] suggesting a kinda filtering system at check in, she was inferring separate cues for the way a person looks.

I,m not implying its a good measure to implement. I was showing the sort of reaction that can come about by terrorism. It instills fear in the general population and can push people to knee jerk reactions. If she had thought about it, or in retrospect, i would imagine she would see the injustice of her response.

What would be full to bursting? Your testicles? Or my leg room? ;)

I know you weren't implying that.

I don't think she'd change her mind if she thought about it more. She sounds like your typical garden variety bigot; and these people really piss me off.

Goddamned it. Of course it is. Bastards. Guess my boycott of flying continues. This **** is just getting annoying. I mean, they really think they'd have stopped this guy or maybe someone else? If someone really wants to blow up a plane, so long as there are planes and people are allowed to fly on them, they'll be able to eventually. I don't think the extra "security" does anything but offer up more big brother type behavior. It's already annoying enough to go through the f'n airport; we don't need to make it worse.

From the article, Canada is doing this voluntarily.

Transport Canada decreed the new airport security measures — which take effect immediately — in a statement Monday evening. They include a prohibition on bringing baggage aboard the cabin of any flight bound for the United States, with certain exceptions:

All this means is that people who try to avoid baggage claim by bringing those medium-sized carry-on overnight bags on board will have to check them and pay the new checked baggage charges like the rest of us.

I've seen people wheeling their overnight bag, a computer bag, a large coat, and a shopping bag, stuffing them in any overhead bin they please. Two carry-on items, nitwits.

Flying, even short distances, is time consuming. Plan accordingly, pack accordingly and you'll be fine.

On a side note -- for those of you who never have to fly through LAX, you really don't know what a mismanaged airport and total inconvenience is. It is by far the worst run airport in the country.

Except now it means that even a small-sized bag must be checked in. So much for those who travel light.

TSA lost my vote of confidence when they started pulling little white girls who couldn't be over 100 lbs into the secondary line for pat downs and chemical wipes.

Seriously. That girl doesn't even look like she could carry her own luggage.

TSA is a joke.

Well, we gotta pick on everyone, so no one feels like they're being profiled. Nevermind what a colosal waste of time it is.

The thing that some folks don't see, is that the time they spend cavity serching Aunt Bea, two terrorists can slip right on through with their exploding under-roos.

But, hey, who said common sense had to come into it?
