British man said to be mentally ill executed in China

Whatever. Half of the "law enforcement" in that country is involved in the drug trade anyway. How do you think China White manages to always escape the sea ports and make it to all corners of the world?

The guy got caught. His loss. Lots of others make it through.

I could care less if someone claims to be mentally ill. It doesn't the fact they committed the crime.

"Mr Shaikh's family said he suffered from bipolar disorder.

They said he had been delusional and duped into a carrying a suitcase that did not belong to him when he was found with 4kg of heroin in Urumqi, north-west China, in September 2007."

Regardless, I don't trust the People's Republic of China at all. For all I know he was a political dissenter and they had this staged to justify killing him.

Excellent observation. I didn't notice he was headed to Xinjiang. Look at his name too. He was definitely profiled in the least, and at best he was setup.

China commited 72 % of all state sanctioned murders in the world last year.

This man would not have been put to death even by Dubya!

He has not got the mental ability to recognise right from wrong.

China has 1/4 of the world's population. What is their per capita execution rate?

What kind of trial could this man possibly have had in a half hour? While I don't support drug smuggling, I don't trust China at all when they say this man's human rights were guaranteed.

they topped over 1700 victims last year.

It has been reported that the drug smugglers promised to make this poor deluded man a Pop Star in China if he carried the drugs.

The criteria to be taken to court in the UK is that he would have to have the mental capacity plead guilty or not guilty, this poor man was not capable of that.

I understand, and although the number is still horrific, the number per capita matters just as much. China has 1.4 billion people. That would naturally increase the incidence of capital punishment by raw numbers.

If their numbers are higher per capita then I would be more alarmed.

well China excuted this person and what did England do to stop this nothing, yea they stomp there feet and cried like all politition do but in the end England nor any other County in the World wasn't going to do anything do to the fact of global trade.

way to cave in England what you should have done was march over tot eh Chinese Embasy place everyone under arrest and inform China that they have two choice.

Choice #1 Release this person to an UK official and we will release you Embasy

Choice #2 If you do excute this person then we will excute your Ambasador and declare a state of War.

But then again in this day and age none of this would happen.

it is the De-capita that worries me

We should export opium to the bastards.

His family said? :doh

He has not got the mental ability to recognise right from wrong.
Where do you get this information from?
From the family saying that he suffered from bipolar disorder?
I ask because that in and of itself does not mean that he could not distinguish between right and wrong, nor does it indicate that he was of such limited mental capacity that he could be duped into carrying a suitcase that did not belong to him.

What did China have to say about his supposed mental illness?
In a statement issued after the execution, the Chinese Embassy said
...
"As for his possible mental illness which has been much talked about, there apparently has been no previous medical record."
Which hasn't been refuted by the British Government in any way in the provided news report.

bull****, just because he's got bipolar dosent mean he's a dickhead, he just can go from being very happy to very sad rather quickly, just because he's got a mental illness dosent mean he can't think for himself, one of the most brilliant men i know has aspergers syndrome.

This is a barbaric act, a reflection of China's backwardness, a result of China flexing its muscles as an emerging global power and a worrying indication of China's hardline leadership emerging as they position themsleves for the Hu-Wen succession.

The standard of China's legal system is appalling. Of couse the Chinese communist party will receive comfort from the rightwing conservatives who agree with killing mentally ill people. Of couse Western conservatives finding common cause with repressive regimes on law and order issues is no great surprise.

That's somewhat patronizing, how does bipolar prevent people from recognizing right or wrong?

iran and singapore have more executions per capita than china

2,000 executions a year is a drop in the bucket.....;)
My question is: Why is a person who is mentally ill traveling abroad unaccompanied?......

We should declare war on china for executing someone who was guilty? Are you serious:shock:? Why invade a country for enforcing its laws?

seriously, a drug smuggler should be put to death?

That is the law in China. Do you feel sorry for Christians who are executed for proselytizing in communist countries and other dictatorships or do you think that person knew the risk so why are they complaining? Its like sticking your hand through a fence to pet a dog when there is a beware of dog sign clearly posted on the fence or that the dog is trying to bite at your through the fence. I guess it could be looked at that these people died doing that they wanted to do or it could be looked at that they are idiots who knowingly did something stupid and therefore assumed all risks to commit those crimes.

Quilty of what accourding to what the Chinese said. A 1/2 trail wow maybe we in here in the United states should start using Red China's way's.

That is, unfortunately, quite the possible scenario. I wouldn't trust China with anything.
