BBC News - Iran opposition figures arrested after protests

A number of opposition figures have been arrested in Iran, a day after violent protests in the capital left at least eight people dead.

Those detained include senior aides to opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi.

His nephew Seyed Ali Mousavi was among those killed in Sunday's violence, the worst since June's contested elections.

Family members say they are being prevented from holding his funeral because his body has been taken from the hospital where it was being kept.

And the beat goes on in Iran and not one word out of Mr. Obama mouth over this whole protest.Nor has the EU made any major comments typical of the Left what is going ot take for Mr. Obama and the rest of the World Leaders to finally say enough is enough to Iran when they start killing their own people(oh righ tthey have already done that :doh) How about building uke Bombs (Oh they are already doing that:doh). Well as more Iranians die the more there blood is on the hands of World Leaders who sit by and do nothing.

Well what should they be doing?

Well what should they be doing?

For starters cut off Iran Money then closing all Embasey and then basically stating if you attack your own peole again then we the World will attack and remove this illegal governemnt.

But then again I'm a dreamer:mrgreen:

Not really only one elected World Leader has made any puplic comment and this a Chancl of Germany Mr. Obama sent his NSA out to make his statement while the Canadain PM sent his Minst. of Forg Affairs and France just relesed a very vauge open responce.

The US should send President Carter, he will blame it all on Israel and the zionist jews.

That is probably the worse thing we could do now.

Attacking Iran could actually unite the two factions against us.

Well what should they be doing?

They could at least suggest that our hearts are with the people who want their liberty.

You know, it has always fascinated me -- the Iranian regime is literally, and thoroughly, everything you guys on the left, in your wildest wet dreams, imagine Republicans/conservatives are or would be if they could. As regimes offensive to everything we in the west are supposed to hold dear, this one is among the historically worst.

Yet the people who staged years of protests, by the tens or hundreds of thousands, against Bush don't seem to have much more than a shrug for the Iranian theocracy or its people who want to rid themselves of their repugnance.

No, according to many or most of you folks, they should be engaged. Fox News should be shunned, sanctioned, and ignored, if not put out of business, but it's glad hands all around for those Millennial thugs.

No, Obama made a statement supporting the Iranian protesters and condemning Iran's leadership. You just choose to ignore it due to being partisan or you're watching the FAUX network where they probably left it out on purpose. ;)

US President Barack Obama makes a statement condemning Iran's crackdown on protesters

Obama did condemn the fascist regime when he gave that speech about the attempted terrorist attack, but I doubt the Iranian government even heard the speech. Someone needs to go over there and talk with them in person. I'm not sure if they would listen to John Kerry, but Obama or Clinton *may* have a chance. If all fails, we and the other nations who care about democracy could stop sending them money and/or any other resources.

This is also another example of the United Nations failing to do anything that would advance democracy. They have global peace keeping troops stationed in a number of countries. Why not send them to aid the protesters or help remove this illegal government from it's throne?

You're dreaming. Iran will listen to Obama or Clinton as much as Kim will listen to anyone, which is notta. We need to stay out of it and allow the Iranian populace to topple the leadership. For change to really take place it has to come from within. The people there are perfectly capable of doing it if they really want to, as after all they've done it before.

I'm not dreaming. I said MAY because I know it's very unlikely, but if enough world leaders talk with them and threaten to cut off resources.. It may have some effect. If it doesn't though, that's okay because we tried and it shows our deepest support for the Iranian people.

Well I agree. I strongly believe real peace comes through revolution. The Romanian revolution of 1989 is a good example..but we could still do a few things as a country to weaken the fascists without stopping the protesters from fighting for their freedom. Like I said, if we and other democratic nations give Iran any founding or resources that help their government.. It's time to cut it off.

And how would that be any different from what has already been tried?

iran

obama started his careening career there with his oft repeated campaign pledge to pursue personal diplomacy with "the leaders of iran"

next, he declared the despots enjoyed a natural right to nuclear power

he reached out from atop a pyramid in cairo, he's been reaching out for a year

he gets bitch slapped in return at every intersection

hu and putin have made it plain as a pane they will NOT be there for us vs the shiites

in june, when protests first erupted over the ripped-off plebiscite, obama was way too little, way too late

for a week he stuck by his, "i don't want to be seen as interfering"

he gets blamed for astroturfing the streets of tehran, either way

truth is, he's loathe to offend those with whom he's so eager to meet and transform

and then there's qom, announced a day after obama chaired the un security council and won passage unanimously of his pretty pledge for a nuke free world

not til christmas does the ditherer finally speak out for FREEDOM against an oppressive totalitarianism

obama's approach is outright unamerican

we've seen a dramatically increased belligerence from tehran since obama came to power

reports this morning are iran is smuggling yellowcake from kazakhstan, all the cables are chattering today

i don't think they quite appreciate that that's what ahmedinejad WANTS them talking about

the scrawny dude in the bad suit who held our 50 for 444 days eagerly gives our president noogies

obama is just now coming around to realizing he's gotta get tough with iran

but there's nothing he can do

he's forced everything upon israel whom he has also daily dissed, exact opposite of his iranian reachout

the same week he's forced to take back his "everything worked fine" rationalization concerning mutallab, forced by events to toughen it up, he's compelled finally, after 6 months, to abandon his "non interference" approach to persia and call out forcefully, like an american, against "the iron fist of brutality"

obama has wasted A YEAR with iran

and not just ANY year, but one where real hope for change in that repressively fundamental state flashed weekly across every tv screen

Well I can only speak for myself but personally Im in favor of the protests i just dont see what western governments can do, that they arent already doing, that wouldn't make things worse. Im open for suggestions though. Whereas on the other hand there are plenty of situations around the world were we could do much more.

Totally agree. We need to stay out and let the chips fall where they may.

The volume of noise from the press and world leadership, including the US, EU, and UN - is hardly a peep.

Compare it to what was being spewed in israel's direction during the Jan 2009 mopup.

I think a visit by John Kerry would send the wrong message.

Hot Air Blog Archive Kerry to go to Iran

It is funny how the arch-leftist idiots in the senate and house keep doing this; last year it was Pelosi going to Syria while the democracy advocates there were begging her not to.

Nothing can get in the way of a leftist photo opportunity, partcularly one that allows a leftist to pretend they actually care about someone's human rights in the ME....

My suggestion is to airdrop 10 million walkie-talkies and 5 million satellite phones with anti-jamming technologies, that the fascist murderous dogs in the regime cannot block the way they are doing with the web.

Totally agree. We need to stay out and let the chips fall where they may.

The problem and risk with doing so is:

1) the regime might slaughter outright the protestors, which they started to last week - not a good thing to have on your conscience

2) this could be the one opportunity to help the unarmed protesters overcome the regime

3) by not taking action, we could be allowing the regime to buy more time and develop nuclear weapons.

All 3 are catastrophic, and #3 is unimaginable, if not criminal, for the world's leadership to allow.
