Father of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, Nigerian terror suspect in Flight 253 attack, w

    NY Daily News
    Dec 26, 2009

The terror suspect who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound plane is the son of a Nigerian banker who alerted U.S. authorities to his "extreme religious views" months ago, it was reported Saturday.

The father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a former minister and chairman of First Bank in Nigeria, is shocked that his son was even was allowed to fly to the U.S., family members told the Nigerian newspaper This Day.
Father of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, Nigerian terror suspect in Flight 253 attack, warned U.S.

I agree with the father. Why was this guy even allowed to fly to the USA?
Other reports are comming out that U.S. officials have known that Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab was suspected of having terrorist ties. WTF!

    I agree with you.

In the other thread, there's a lot of talk about the need for racial profiling. I honestly do not consider it necessary. We had concrete information that this guy had dangerous associations. He had been flagged.

There are tools in place to prevent these sorts of occurrences. There needs to be an investigation into who is dropping the ball.

We don't need racial profiling. What we need is law enforcement, intelligence, and command staff who are actually willing to take tip offs seriously.

Are you claiming that this was a conspiracy ? We need to know more than we do at this time but on the surface it appears that this was an isolated incident and that the failure to block the terrorist from the flight was the fault of the European country where he stopped on his way here. I do not expect much from the Nigerians from a security perspective since their expertese is pretty much nothing more than scam baiting and fraud. Maybe we need to ban any flights that either originate or even stop in Nigeria!

I don't think anyone's calling it a conspiracy; it appears to be a monumental screw-up.

I'm not sure if it's due to information not being shared, or security agencies failing to act on the information. Like I said, I'm hoping for an investigation, and that whatever failed here will be corrected to protect against this happening again.

I just heard some more on CNN and it appears that the Nigerian Fire Lap Dancer was on a "watch list " but that so called watch list apparently did not do much good. Therefore I agree with you that this does appear to be one "monumental screw-up" as you said. What I am worried about is if this is the tip of the proverial iceberg of "monumental screw-ups" !

    Let's hope not !

No one said anything about racial profiling. We were talking about profling, period. Not just based on race.

    Just setting the record straight.

Actually, several people specifically mentioned Arabs, repeatedly.

Yes, because so far, Arabs are the guys who have caused most of the problems. It's basic tactics, you always go after the larger threat, first.

That is still racial profiling. Look, if you want to do it, you call it what it is.

There are more reliable indicators: associations, prior criminal history, etc.
