Dec. 25 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama ordered heightened security after authorities detained a passenger who may have tried to blow up a flight bound for Detroit from Amsterdam with 278 passengers.

The passenger was trying to destroy Northwest Airlines Flight 253, and an explosive device failed, the Associated Press reported, citing U.S. intelligence officials it didn’t name. The passenger was subdued and the incident resulted in “minor injuries,” said Susan Elliott, a spokeswoman for Northwest parent Delta Air Lines Inc. in Atlanta.

Obama called for “all appropriate measures to be taken to increase security” after the incident, the White House said in a statement. The Department of Homeland Security said passengers may notice additional screening at airports.

The article I read suggested this p.o.s. was a loner who just wanted to claim AQ affiliations. Typically, Nigerian's aren't too bright, are they? In fact, the only people I know, generally speaking, that are dumber than them are the people who fall for their internet email scams (which, if I understand it right, is a major source of income for that country.)

I hope they cut his nuts off and then hang him. I'm just FULL of Christmas spirit today!

Oooo-Rah.

So....he didn't ignite the explosives...they failed....just say'n.

Passenger Syed Jafri, a U.S. citizen who had flown from the United Arab Emirates, said the incident happened during the plane's descent. Jafri said he was seated three rows behind the passenger and said he saw a glow, and noticed a smoke smell. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."

It looks like the guy managed to ignite something, just not anything that would do extensive damage.

I think Captain America's right, and this is like that shoe-bomb guy.

I think the article I read said the P.O.S. was in a burn hospital now? :rofl

One of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

Looks like salt and sugar will now be banned from the skies

This could be a dry run designed to test the system.

Pretty dumb, because now we are going to change our security to combat this new threat.

How about a TSA Nigerian scanner? A machine that identifies Nigerian DNA.

Hey, it couldn't hurt.

How is this a new threat?

It could have been a test of difficult it would be to get explosive materials onto the flight deck.

It's like sending out skirmishers to test the strength of the opposing army's defensive perimeter, looking for weak spots.

If this guy is just a skirmisher and he found a hole in our system, we may not necessarily know about it, but he does and he'll pass that info along to his comrades. It's not like we can make him talk and gain information from him, or anything.

Disclaimer: before anyone wets herself and starts demanding documentation, I'm just theorizing.

I think a machine that ID's Muslims would be better.

I'd prefer that machine to be more like one of those bug zappers myself. Identifies AND rectifies.

And its disconcerting how many of these there holes are. I accidentally managed to smuggle a pen knife through airport security last year (unbeknown to me it had been left in a hidden pocket in my backpack since a camping trip i took when I was about 12) by the time i discovered it it had been through metal detectors several times without a peep.

I went on a trip to British Columbia last year; a travelling companion had a small pocket knife in his carry on. We flew from Lafayette, to Dallas, to Vancouver, to our destination and the knife wasn't discovered until we were coming back through Vancouver. That bag was checked three times and not until the fourth time was the knife discovered.

Wanna know what the Canadian security guy did? Mailed it back to Louisiana for him!...:rofl

All I could do was shake my ****ing head.

I couldn't agree more. The smell would be kinda worth the piece of mind.

I sure hope they don't start profiling Muslims... it could save lives, catch a few criminals; we wouldn't want that to happen.

I wonder... when is the next cartoon protest coming.

Well my point is my practical then anything else. What does a Muslim look like? It would be pretty stupid to just profile vaugley Arab looking people when a Turkish or Albanian terrorist could slip through the net while airport security are busy searching a Lebanese christian. All Al-Qaeda would have to do is focus its recruitment on lighter skinned Muslims.

No harm in trying. Most bombers haven't looked like 1 & 3... have they? It's not the Albanian or Kazakhs giving us problems.

Some of the best fish I've had was on the waterfront in Durres; can't remember the name of the restaurant but it's on the 2nd floor of a 2 floor structure.

It seems they haven't had much success... I'm sure they have tried... or at least sniffed around for opportunities.

Well yes there is in that your making Al-Qaedas job extreamly easy. Like i said all they have to do is send a lighter skinned Muslim through while airport security are busy searching a Lebanese Christian.

So far, how many non-Arab Muslims have killed Americans?

The idea that the enemy will justchange tactics because we're onto them isn't an excuse to do nothing.

Wells theres the Taliban for one thing..... Still even if you focus on Arabs theres still alot of variety in how people look. Yassar Arafat was quite light-skinned for example.

Didn't say to only profile, but LOOK at who has been giving us hell? You don;t fight a war only with bullets, you use everything, and when one group is giving you hell, you should take special interest in that group. They've earned it.

In a sane world we wouldn't be blamed, instead... THEY would be pissed at those in their community wreaking havoc on their lives.

But we're not living in a sane world. We're living in a PC world that positions us to get our troops and civilians killed.

I wonder how arab-looking this Nigerian guy was? Better check out african-looking people. But if AQ know that they'll start sending white-looking folk. What to do!
