Passenger Ignites Explosive on Delta Flight, Al Qaeda Connection Reported

Ordering additional screening because of someone's passport, behavior, travel history, or ticket/baggage status: Completely logical (and happens already)

Ordering additional screening because of someone's name, religion, or terroristy-looking skin color: Absolutely moronic.

You acknowledge that you attribute negative characteristics to entire racial or religious groups based on the actions of a few people. Definitionally, you are obstinately devoted to your own opinions and prejudices.

Please, don't tell us you're a 23 y/o that thinks you got it all figgered out. Please?

RightInNYC.....did you notice that you racially profiled apdst and he had a problem with it? Lmao. He got angry because you thought it was kind of awkward that a black guy had never heard of Mos Def. Then proceeded to state why profiling Muslims is a good thing. You can't make this type of **** up.

Are you one of those black folks who don't like being profiled? I guess hypocrites do come in all colours.

I one of those black folks that does't like being profiled, but understands that it's because my fellows have shown their asses over the years and can understand the fear and paranoia.

Oh so you don't like being profiled and advocate it? You're a hypocrite. Check. Considering that blacks disproportionately commit more murders than whites, would you also get mad if every time there was murder in your area police came knocking at your door?

No, he racially stereotyped me. Was it crucial to the frum security to assume that since I'm black, that I must listen to rap music?

I know enough to know that I don't know very much at all. That's the difference between you and I.

Of course, and he sees no incongruity there.

No, I don't think you've reached the point in your life to know what you do and don't know. Because, you seem to already know everything. Good luck with that.

What is the difference b/w racially profiling and stereotyping? Seems like synonymous terms to me. Both assume characteristics of a person b/c of their race.

This is what profiling is :

Racial Profiling: Definition | American Civil Liberties Union

discriminatory practice by law enforcement officials of targeting individuals for suspicion of crime based on the individual's race, ethnicity, religion or national origin. Criminal profiling, generally, as practiced by police, is the reliance on a group of characteristics they believe to be associated with crime. Examples of racial profiling are the use of race to determine which drivers to stop for minor traffic violations (commonly referred to as "driving while black or brown"), or the use of race to determine which pedestrians to search for illegal contraband.

This is what stereotyping is :

stereotyping - Definition of stereotyping | Encyclopedia.com: Dictionary of Business and Management

Making assumptions about individuals or groups based on information (which may or may not be valid) obtained before the individual or group has been encountered. Once encountered, opinions formed may be based on dress, speech, gender, ethnic origin, nationality, and gestures. Unfortunately, human beings are liable to have selective prejudices towards their fellows, seeing only what they want to see and ignoring factors that do not fit in with their preconceived beliefs. They also tend to assume that all the individuals of a group have the same, or similar, characteristics. Thus: • all graduates are clever • all unemployed people are lazy are two of the stereotypes that have to be resisted in carrying out job selection interviews. See also horns and halo effect.

Stereotyping refers to the action. Profiling refers to stereotyping when done by law enforcement officials. It is a term. If you think I'm wrong, you're more than welcome to explain the difference.

Here is an example of stereotyping :

A large number of black people commit crimes. If you're black you're probably a criminal and should be searched.

Here is another example :

A large number of Muslims are terrorists. If you're a Muslim, you have a high chance of being a terrorist and should be searched.

Well, either I don't attract that kind of attention, or I live in a mostly white neighborhood, so it doesn't happen much. At all, actually.

The bloods next door got the pigs comin' by every other day, though. They stopped by here for coffee the other night...the cops that is.

That's great. The cops were too nice to tell you they were looking around for signs of drugs in your home. You are black after all.

That's wrong. It's a yashemagh. It's the wrong color to be a keffiyeh.

I get 4 points. His two, plus 2 bonus points for the correction.

Uhmm....

The keffiyeh (Arabic: كوفية‎, kūfiyyah, plural كوفيات, kūfiyyāt)), also known as a (ya)shmagh (from Turkish: yaşmak "tied thing"), ghutrah (غترة), ḥaṭṭah (حطّة), mashadah (مشدة) or shemagh is a traditional headdress typically worn by Arab men made of a square of cloth (“scarf”), usually cotton, folded and wrapped in various styles around the head.

I'll just take all the points, a 'yashmagh' and a keffiyeh are the same thing.

Let'em look!!! They won't find anything harder than BC powders.

Ya see? I'm not ****ing up, so therefore, I don't give a ****.

Well, they're different colors and are from different regions, but whatever.

3. Now it's likely that we're going to over-react and implement stupid procedures (like removing shoes) that will hassle everyone and accomplish very little. Rather depressing for those of us who travel frequently.

Why is it stupid to have people remove their shoes?

How do you know that it's accomplished very little?

You think taking off your shoes is harassment? It takes like fifteen seconds.

Then why do intelligence agencies use it? Are they just stupid?

Because they've been in the biz for 60 odd years and haven't learned a damn thing. They've spent all this time waiting for some 20 something y/o, who just started shaving regular last year, to come along and show them how it's done.

Of course you can listen to Myrle Haggard. I'm just surprised that anyone (particularly a purported black person who is active in politics) has never heard of Mos Def, despite his incredibly influential role in hip hop, his acting career, his political involvement, etc..

Never heard of him either until today, I must be living under a rock. BUT, I don't listen to rap.

Correct me if I am not interpreting what you are saying:

People are arguing against it because it is not feasible, meaning that the reason we don't profile is because their are too many people to screen? But, if there were less people, we'd profile?

Read the beginning of the thread on and find out;)

Wonder why it is they still hate us? Obama over there apologizing, claiming we ain't the enemy. And they still hate us.

Why.....oh why?

Are these more chickens coming home to roost? More hatred because of our imperialistic policies? More of the US' fault?

Or...with such an olive branch handing joke of a President...is it now possible we're going to wake up and realize we're at war?

Then why do intelligence agencies use it? Are they just stupid?

Please explain what you mean by this? I think I may know what you mean and if that's the case its far different then what's being discussed here, but figure I'd get you to clarify.

No, it's not harassment. I have no problem with intelligent security, but simple over-reaction to one incident is silly.

It should be quite obvious to anyone who travels a fair amount that we have a lot of superficial security that really doesn't accomplish much.

We need intelligent profiling so that we know who to scrutinize more. Enough with the random searches and stuff.

I think this is when you stopped debating and began regressing.

You do realize that 20 and 30 year old males are in the prime of their life right, which includes mental capabilities.

But, not in practical experience. Actual, "street smarts"--for lack of a better term--trumps most factors.

Picture yourself working in a field. You have two colleagues to whom you can turn for advice. One has 30 years of experience, the other has 5 years. Which one's opinion would you trust more?

Depends. If the one with 30 years of experience is an absolute ****ing moron that has kept his job primarily based on tenure, ass kissing, too costly to get rid of him, whatever other random reason and the 5 year guy actually knows what he's doing, I'd ask the 5 year guy. All things being equal, I'd ask the 30 year experience guy, but very very very rarely do you get a situation where all things is equal.
