It might not be my ox getting gored today, but it could very easily be my ox getting gored tomorrow.

The, "it's not my problem", mentality is harmful to our society.

Living in prison forces you adapt to that kind of culture and you learn to be more of a criminal because that is how things operate in prison.
I was discovering that life just simply isn't fair and bask in the unsung glory of knowing that each obstacle overcome along the way only adds to the satisfaction in the end. Nothing great, after all, was ever accomplished by anyone sulking in his or her misery.

After taking on thw world, we took on the moon. Are these other nations famous for their Capones and Billy the Kids? Hollywood has spent the last 80 years grorifying their criminal violence and alpha male status. There is a certain attitude America has that others do not have. We tend to have egos that need "defended" and this places Americans in a position where our individualism sets us aside form others. Our military is the most powerful in history and we dictate the mood of the globe. We like our sports violent (NFL) and our music aggresive (Rock, Rap).

I believe this attitude that has been cultivated for the last three centuries relates directly towards our higher crime rate, which has steadily gotten worse since the end of WWII.

What is your thinking about why our crime rate is higher? The water?
More poverty, harsh prison conditions, crappy schools, and a vicious war on drugs.

Bet I've asked more than you have. Bet I know more than you know.

Obviously, yet again, you know not of what you speak. I've spoken to lots of inmates. Most openly admit they are guilty, but a handful maintain their innocence. I'll let you in on a story that I heard, and now that I know it was true it's worth telling.

I spoke to an inmate one day who told me a story about how he was set up. They tried to accuse him of selling drugs. They raided his used car dealership, found no drugs, no drug paraphernalia at all, and 40 bucks. He pled not guilty to the charges. During the trial, he saw people testify against him that he didn't even know. After being found guilty, he was locked up with a 20 year sentence. He passed up a 3 year plea deal because he didn't do it. When he got to jail he told someone his name and they replied, "Oh, you're John Doe." He asked why was he saying that. He said that the feds came through the jail asking for people to testify against you for reduced time. He had been locked up about 3 years at the time of my interview. He had an appeal going based on this to reduce his sentence. I recently checked his release date on the internet, and it was cut 5 years! So what he said was TRUE!!! He WAS set up! He plead not guilty, had the crooked feds get inmates who didn't know him to testify against him, and was found guilty based on a corrupt trial. Now you won't heart that from the, "Well, don't break the law crowd" because they want to believe the justice system works well. That guy didn't break the law. He was 40 years old and had not a blemish on his record.

So what do you tell someone who is innocent who is in prison? Do you tell them don't break the law too?

So please, refrain from speaking about things that you know nothing of. You really make yourself look like an idiot.

    I'll bet you do too.

Man, I just served two dozen summons and complaints from everybody from the police chief down to the city clerk regarding two wrongly convicted men here in my city. They have already been exhonorated and now it's their turn to have their fun. It's gonna cost the city millions and more power to them. They deserve it. I know there are innocent people behind bars. I truly regret this collateral damage, so to speak, of our less than perfect justice system.

My opinion mostly reflects my disdain for the other 99.99% of those CONVICTS that have no place walking the same streets as civilized law abiding citizens.

And you are wasting your time with all the condescending "idiot" talk as you have not done anything to merit any intellectual highground around here.

    Just sayin'.

And, if you think that I am someone who gives even a popcorn fart as to the well being of the CONVICTS locked up in our prisons, you are sadly mistaken sir. For I do not.

    But......

Just because I do not care does not mean I don't have feelings. I feel real bad that I do not care.

    But.....

    I don't care.

I know I'm jumping in here but I agree with Captain America here. We treat those that have been convicted for a crime like dirt. Regardless if they were innocent or not. If there is even a hint of a record, be it a conviction or otherwise most people are leary of them. Due no doubt to the published details of recidivism rate. Doesn't that indicate that we are not helping the problem? That we are just making things worse?

What we need to do is figure out how to actually rehabilitate those that have been convicted of a crime instead of just throwing them in a jail cell and forgetting about them until they get out...where we just make things harder on them. This does nothing good for society as a whole.

We've been trying for years. I spent several years working daily with juvenile offenders and attending our weekly "care treatment team" meetings and all our starry eyed "behavior modification" programs. Hell, I was the leader of the pack. I knew in my heart we could make a change. I was so young then.

Then I had to work "up on the hill" at MSU (Maximum Security Unit) for the criminally insane two or three days a week or to catch some overtime as the oppertunity presented itself.

We tried everything. B-mod. Token economy.

I have just come to the conclusion, just based on my lifetime experiences, that there is just bad people in this world and all the psycho-babble in the world ain't never gonna change it. You can't rehabilitate these people.

I ain't talkin' about some teenager in some local jail sleeping off a drunk driving charge. I'm talking about the hard punks doing hard time. I think the "3-strike" law should be a maximum of 2 strikes myself. Screw 'em. Let them eat swill and drink sewage.
