Senate OKs health care measure, reaching milestone

absolutely, your choice to buy insurance

or face criminalization

Wrong, you can pay the fine/tax and avoid buying insurance and going to jail.

and just what is the FINE for?

LOL!

It's like the fine for not having insurance on your car.
What you don't seem to understand is that the rest of us pay for those that don't have insurance. They should pay their way.

i understand all of it

at some level it makes sense

but just trying telling the youth vote, the invulnerables, they're suddenly required to make this lifestyle-changing purchase

and if they don't, they're fined

and if they fail to fork over, they're cuffed

i mean, the POLITICS of it

congrats, president obama

live it, love it

the youth already STAYED HOME twice

in virginia and new jersey, nov 3

the puppy love's pooped

now, just wait til they learn their new requirements...

Do you want to pay their way because their choice is to freeload off others?
Back in the 70s in my teens I took responsiblity for myself and bought health insurance. Everyone should take personal responsiblity and if they don't they should pay a price.

thank you for asking, what a classy approach

sincerely, i don't have the answers

i'm not the president, i don't have to have em

he does

my opinion is totally uninteresting, i'm just one little guy

just like you and everyone else

i'm really not that interested in any one person's opinion, i'm surprised you care about mine

tho the overall drift of discussions is super important to all of us, inerrantly revealing

i just want facts

and the POLITICS of those real things going down

in my opinion, this piece is political poison

cuzza the youth vote

cuzza the seniors

cuzza the teabaggers

cuzza america the way she is, in her all her vast size and scope, today

cuzza the states' budgets, they can't possibly handle this (and everyone knows it)

cuzza obama's personality, his amateurish salesmanship

this health care bill is gonna pulverize the party in power

my sincere opinion

Up to $3,800 fine for failure get health insurance
Sep 8 12:54 PM US/Eastern

WASHINGTON (AP) - A top senator is calling for fines of up to $3,800 on families who fail to get medical insurance after a health care overhaul goes into effect.
The plan from Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana would make health insurance mandatory, just like auto coverage. It would provide tax credits to help cover the cost for people making up to three times the federal poverty level. That's about $66,000 for a family of four, and $32,000 for an individual.

But those who still don't sign up would face hefty fines, starting at $750 a year for individuals and $1,500 for families. The maximum penalty on individuals would be $950.

Baucus is hoping his plan can win bipartisan support. A copy of his proposal was obtained by The Associated Press.

How the Baucus bill contradicts Obama's goals - Sep. 22, 2009)

from cnn, an article that made the rounds in september

it's very difficult reading, but what it says is---obamacare incentivizes employers to drop their coverage and pay the much smaller fines

and the employees dropped are also incentivized to go it alone, they will take cash instead of insurance from their employers

and when they go buy, they get subsidies from the govt so come out a couple thousand a year ahead

everyone wins, the employer who dumps coverage, the worker who gets subsidized

everyone, that is, except for the federal debt

ie, the taxpayer

You don't get it. Buying health insurance is taking responsiblity. Leeching off the rest of us isn't. There should be consequences for letting the rest of us pay for your healthcare.
It amazes me that so called conservatives think it's OK to go without insurance and let others pay for it. Time to make deadbeats get insurance or pay their own way.

we get it, friend

there's right ways to go about what you're saying

and there's reid's way

either way, you won

it's yours

you don't need to convince us

you have to bring along america

better start with the youth

the seniors, forget about it

seniors, by the way, run this country

especially in off years

cuz they got all the money, they vote, and they know what's going on

congrats, enjoy your big health care win

don't look at the polls, they might depress you

This one sentance proved YOU are the one who doesn't get it. I'll go ahead and explain this for you, the federal government is neither charged with nor granted the power to enforce morality, ethics, or responsibility, they have very limited and specific powers for a very good reason, maybe you should go back and read the founding writings again, you would see why our current political system is a mess and WHY they weren't supposed to go this far in the first place.
.....consequences for letting the rest of us pay for your healthcare.
Ask yourself why you have to pay for "others" healthcare in the first place, then I will be happy to answer any questions you have about it. Until then, maybe you should stay away from this type of rhetoric, as you are complaining about a symptom, not a problem.

Deadbeats huh? So Ms. Pelosi.....oh sorry, you are using Democrat talking points again, tell whatever group you are getting these from that it is NOT.....let me repeat........NOT the federal governments responsibility to legislate healthcare OR responsibility.

This legislation sucks and liberals own it....plus the fallout, stop with the rationalizing and get to acceptance, liberalism fails again.
Bye.

Man you are Queen of Drama.
Why didn't the GOP do it the right way when they had the chance? They are great at ignoring prolems, but useless at solving them. This was not a victory for me. It should have never got to this point where 30 million Americans have no insurance and millions more can barely pay for it. Healthcare has become a huge drain on our economy.

Another phoney conservative. You believe it's OK for people to leech off others?
The federal government is granted the power to ensure the general welfare of it's people. The health of it's people is included in "general welfare". Sorry , but read the constitution.
I do believe everyone should have basic health insurance as long as hospitals are forced to treat them. The people should not have to pay for their treatment through higher taxes, premiums and healthcare costs. The government should be there to help those that can not afford insurance to get it.

I think the healthcare bill is horrible but I do know the system is broken and something had to be done. Too bad the republicans sat on their hands when they had the chance to make some good changes. They are responsible for the democrats screwing everything up because they did nothing.

The democrats believe they are doing it right. The republicans believe it is wrong. They had the chance to do it their way and did nothing. They should stop crying about it .
Heck by the time the bill makes it through the House it will be totally ineffective anyway.

well, there ya go

They are responsible for the democrats screwing everything up because they did nothing

LOL!

I blame the republicans as much as the democrats for the bill. Their inaction has brought us to this point.

Bassman:

First of all, welcome to DP. A piece of advice, when you link to hyper-partisan sites like Breitbart, it doesn't do a lot for your credibility. In other words, don't present spin and talking points to support your argument.

1) Have the bills been reconciled yet?
2) Has anybody actually been fined for not buying health insurance?
3) Why would someone who could afford health insurance not have it?
4) Won't the fines offset the massive costs of running public hospital emergency rooms that are being misused as primary care physicians?

If you're a fat slob super-sizing your way to early onset diabetes, get off your couch, sell your widescreen tv, and buy some friggin' insurance, porky.

Let's all calm the f the down and take an objective intelligent look at the proposed bills... Shall we?
