Me, kinda old fasioned like that.
No, this is what happens when people bitch too god-damned much about the cost of the defense budget and corner cutting ensues.

Now we spend some bucks, not many, to encrypt the video down-links.

No battle plan survives contact with the enemy.

Exactly right! Every other branch--branch of arms and branch of service-- exists to support the infantry's mission.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

    Another great point, thank you!

The AF guys really hate it when you point that out.

The cost of good encryption is minor, especially compared to everything else on an UAV. This was caused by incompetence, not lack of funding.

Yeah, because the infantry were vital in the Berlin airlift or fighting the Barbary pirates. Every branch has its own uses, depending on the circumstances. Infantry support is one of the most crucial, but hardly the only requirement. Not to mention that the "support" can often do more work than the infantry themselves.

Was the Berlin airlift a battle? No.

And, yes, there were Marine infantrymen posted to the United States Navy ships that went after the barbary pirates. Wanna guess why they were there?

But, ultimately, we're talking about ground combat, not policing the high seas, nor humanitarian missions.

Not to mention that the "support" can often do more work than the infantry themselves.
That's true to an extent, but there has never been a war that didn't end with infantry soldiers finishing the job.

there was no 'fight' in the Berlin Airlift.
However, resupply by aircraft is just one of the many ways air supports the infantry.

    or fighting the Barbary pirates
This was to preserve the SLOC. This, ultimately, boils doen to supporting infantry by making sure that they are in supply.
And in any event -- the shores of Triploi were not taken by warships.

Whatever the 'requirement', the effect is to make the infanrty's job easier.
    Thus, support.
