Italian premier Berlusconi bloodied by protester

Hopefully they throw that scumbag away for a long time.I wonder if the Bush bashers were salivating and thinking to themselves if only someone did that to Bush.

ROME An attacker hurled a statuette at Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, striking the leader in the face at the end of a rally today and leaving the stunned 73-year-old media mogul with a bloodied mouth, police said.

The 42-year-old man accused of attacking Berlusconi in Milan as he signed autographs was immediately taken into custody. The Italian leader was rushed to a hospital where he was being held overnight.

TV showed the stunned Berlusconi with blood under his nose, on his mouth and under one eye as he was lifted to his feet by aides after the attack. The leader was hustled into the back of a car, but he immediately got out, apparently to show he was not badly injured.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Seen it yesterday.
Assaulting a prime minister should earn one a life in prison in my opinion.

Not that I wish this on Obama, but it would be interesting to see the reaction on the left if it occurred.

On one side any attack on a political leader is serious in a democratic country.

On the other side, it is Berlusconi... could not have happened to a nicer guy.

I have no doubt that he will exploit it to the fullest with a crackdown on "leftist" groups and immigrants.. basically anyone in the opposition to him. I would also not be surprised if he had staged the whole damn thing himself, considering his reaction after being attacked...

The question is if it will mean more sympathy for him or just harden the opposition to him and his policies. Of course I hope the latter, there is no room for another El Duce in Europe.

Who cares about his vanity? I was just aghast that you find it acceptable that a head of state is attacked physically because you don't like him? And then accuse him of staging it.....I guess credibility is of no concern eh?

Probably the same as everyone is saying here. The attacker should be prosecuted for his actions. Do you think they would say something different?

I think that the first and most often reported blurb, true or not would be an assumption that someone on the right would be responsible.
