Hipsters repaint bike lanes in brush off to Hasids

Hipsters repaint bike lanes in brush off to Hasids - NYPOST.com

Groups of bicycle-riding vigilantes have been repainting 14 blocks of Williamsburg roadways ever since the city sandblasted their bike lanes away last week at the request of the Hasidic community.

The Hasids, who have long had a huge enclave in the now-artist-haven neighborhood, had complained that the Bedford Avenue bike paths posed both a safety and religious hazard.

Scantily clad hipster cyclists attracted to the Brooklyn neighborhood made it difficult, the Hasids said, to obey religious laws forbidding them from staring at members of the opposite sex in various states of undress. These riders also were disobeying the traffic laws, they complained.

And why does your tone suggest that you do not care about children?

So just because they lack self control and can't help but check out people in biking outfits the city feels the need to take away the bike lanes? What a crock. I don't blame these guys for doing this. More power to them.

Yeah seriously, sounds like some Sharia law to me.

What's so ridiculous is that the absence of the bike lane doesn't change the fact that it's a critical route to the Williamsburg bridge- and therefore an inevitable route for bikers heading to work in Manhattan. The absence of a lane wont change the amount of bike traffic.

I'm surprised they aren't just planning scantily clad protests in their faces. That would be my next suggestion.

Religion is given way too much control over public policy these days. It's not even about compromise anymore... it's becoming too dictatorial.

And the original reason Jews came to live in New York was that it was such a tolerant place, and they were a people who were generally the object of great intolerance. It's nice to see how they repay the favor.

Only one thing for the cyclists to do.

have the good looking fit gals don their scantiest but still legal swimwear (in the spring) and start walking to the temple in the morning and walking back towards the homes after temple is over.

If the Hasids thought some chick in shorts and halter riding a bike was a religious hazard, what are they going to say about a pair of fine firm glutes walking in front of them all the way home?

That's what should be done, until the bike ways are restored.

I'm not convinced that the Hasid definition of "scantily clad" isn't "not wearing a bee-keeper suit".

I don't associated hipsters with extreme exposure...a lot of tank tops but not mesh shirts or something like that.

Re: Hipsters repaint bike lanes in brush off to Hasids

I'm not so sure I understand this. Even if they got rid of the bike lanes, you can't ban the bikes from using the road. Bikes are still considered vehicles and are able to use the road (less specifically posted). So if they get rid of the bike lanes, all they do is decrease the safety of the bicyclists using the road to get to work. As for scantily clad people...it's America. So long as they adhere to proper decency laws (such as not biking completely in the buff) there's nothing you can do about it.

I guess I come from a place which is extremely bike friendly. In Colorado, we encourage it as much as possible, and people take it to the extreme (biking up the canyon roads and such). So we've had to learn to get along (though it doesn't always work...always bikes bitching about cars and vis versa). There are bike lanes all over and rules for it. And people wear the stupid biking gear (tight spandex, pretending they're professional riders), but who really cares. So long as they aren't riding 3 abreast across a lane blocking traffic for everyone else (we had to make a rule about that because we have a good number of highly pretentious bike riders).

As such, I'm not sure they have an actual legal basis for the complaint. It's America, there's people do all sorts of ****. And there's bound to be people doing **** that you don't like. But so long as they aren't infringing upon any rights, there's not much one can rightfully do about it. Take this as a challenge, how strong is their conviction to their god. Though I really can't see the problem with hot women riding bikes past you. Other than the fact that you'll fall down or something equally stupid. It's a law really...when you see a hot chick, you're about to do something stupid to embarrass yourself.
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo
