Attacked Asian Students Afraid To Go to School | NBC Philadelphia

Dozens of Asian students who were attacked and beaten at South Philadelphia High School last week have opted not to return to school on Monday over concerns for their safety...

...Tensions between black and Asian students at the school erupted in a series of assaults last week, leading to 10 suspensions and several students seeking medical treatment...

...School officials said last week's clashes strained efforts to improve race relations...

This story is some heinous bull**** on several levels, but before I discuss the actual issue, I want to discuss the media treatment of it.

First: "Tensions between black and Asian students"

There are no tensions "between" black and Asians. This is blacks blatantly targeting and attacking Asians, for no reason. This isn't peace keeping between two ethnic groups with legitimate grievances against each other- this is one group, the blacks, actively targeting the other group, the Asians, without provocation. There is no exchange. It's entirely one sided.

Second: "efforts to improve race relations"

Again suggesting that their needs to be some sort of "opened dialogue" between the two groups. No, blacks need to stop attacking Asians. What are the Asians supposed to do, start being less Asian? Because being Asian is their only provocation.

This story makes me furious. I spent most of my life as a white minority in black-majority schools and it was pretty ****ty, but I understand the historical consequences of whites treatments of blacks.

But I cannot even express how disgusted I am that American blacks, who have had state aid lavished upon them for decades, are treating Asian immigrants -people who have struggled without support to make a life in this country- so wretchedly.

What's even more infuriating is the school systems treatment of the issue. It took them an entire week to respond, and their response was a committee meeting. And notice that the perpetrators (the ten at least that they bothered to catch) were not charged with assault, weren't even expelled, they were just given suspensions. Meaning that they'll be back within a month, in the same school. Could it be because the entire school system is run by blacks?

I have experienced my entire life the predatory behavior of blacks against all other races in the schools of this city- and I don't think the issue is just in the city, I think it's equally true in other black-majority cities. My high school was about 30 percent white, which was enough to protect each other, but it was still a struggle. This was not racist white banding together to oppress blacks- it was white people from all over the city trying to merely protect ourselves from unrestrained black violence. I don't personally believe in reinstating systematic racism and I believe that the problems of the black community aren't necessarily inherent to black genetics (although they are inherent to black culture) but I do strongly understand how other whites (and other non-blacks) I grew up with came to those conclusions. And this article illustrates why. If blacks want to make some racist Asian skinhead gangs, this is a great way to do it. And who will be at fault?

Sorry, your anger is misplaced.

When other races clash with black in America, they are making themselves subject to hate-crime prosecution.

That's all there is to it.

Right, wrong, they got the gun. So it doesn't matter what the real issues are.

Oh, while Philadelphia is one thing, google "Latasha Harlan".

Well asian isn't really a protected class in America. Kinda odd, but they're up there with white folk. Secondly, no one in the media or politics will call it what it is. Straight up near KKK style racism (near, they haven't hung anyone or burned crosses, but the sentiments are similar) perpetrated by black people. It's completely against PC rules to state the reality. Now, it's not saying that all black people are violent, racist jerks like the one's in this school. But at the same accord, I think the overall treatment and messages we send through society forgives this sort of behavior, or at the very least turns a blind eye. But if you try to turn this into any issue, you'll have Jesse Jackson and Sharpton down there in no time raising hell.

I would find it hilarious if a crowd of white folks were outside Al Sharpton's house with bullhorns protesting his not coming down to Philly to decry this violence.

All this could be addressed if our society would release itself from the burden of guilt for something none of us had any part in. First of all, apply these hate crimes laws to blacks just like they get applied to whites. If this was a targeting of Asians for simply being Asian, then it would only stand to reason that hate crimes legislation is applicable.

Further, stop calling black on other ethnicity racism anything but what it is. It's racism. It isn't reverse racism, it isn't "the black experience", it isn't justified, it isn't anything more than barbarism and uncivilized just as it is when ANYONE else does it.

We also cut all race specific social services and charities. We make everything colorblind and based on need. Also, we ridicule the "it's because I'm black" excuse to the point that it is a scarlet letter to use the excuse. We take away any chance of racially charging our legal system by forbidding such defenses. "No, you did not rob that liquor store and shoot the husband and wife running it because blacks have it so bad. You robbed that liquor store and shot those people because you are a barbaric animal and you need to be put down before you harm anyone else."

Basically, we need to say as a society "Enough".

There is no glass ceiling stopping blacks from achieving. Obama shattered it and there is no more "da man kept me down, yo" excuse anymore. Enough.

I went to school in the good ol' fundamental south. My high-school was split almost evenly between whites and blacks. There was less distancing between skin color and more on academic standings. Those who typically did well in classes, whether black or white, would be one group (this was the group I was of, as it were).

The kids who were going to trade school, or work immediately after High-School had more skin color segregationist attitudes. The whites stayed with the Whites the Blacks stayed with the blacks; there was no animosity, just very little cultural overlap.

Every once in a while there would be a white vs. black brawl or something to that effect and there would be questions to the motivation. I usually find that someone who is going to get into a fight, will get into a fight regardless of skin color. But if there are more blacks and less whites, then I can see the predatory and pack-attacking that could happen.

Well I figure to be attacked for stating what I see as the central issues at work here.

First; Asians have a history of going well in school and excelling in areas of math science etc. on avg.

Second; Asian students have a low numbers of teen pregnancy, on avg.

Third; Asians have have a very low numbers involved in the justice system and low crime rates on avg.

Forth; Black students have a history of extremely high drop out rates and poor grades on Avg.

Fifth; Black children have very high rates teen pregnancy on avg.

Sixth; Black children have very high rates of involvement with the justice system on avg.

Are these just perceptions or are they real? Well sadly they are real but cause if not because of race, in as much as one race being inherently more intelligent than another.

It is all about culture. The major difference between the two cultures is the values placed by family on family and education, and honor. You Black children have it drummed into them almost from birth that they are victims and it's someone Else's fault and they tend to use that as an excuse to not work hard. The school system has reinforced this by lowering the standards for everyone, and this does is create poor students who don't have to do a good job to move on.

The Family unit has been destroyed in part by a welfare system that began a long time ago to reward the break up of the family unit with more benefits.

The reasons for attacks stem from jealousy, ignorance, frustration, lack of education, lack of hope, and misconceptions brought on by all of the above.

Kinda reminds me of my High School days. In my school the majority was white, followed by Blacks, Hispanics (Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, various South Americans) and with Arabs and Asians being last. Although most Asians students didnt stay long same went with Arab students. I got into fights with white students which then got praised by black and Hispanic students. But when I got into fights with fellow Hispanics students I was called a Yankee and blacks called me a sell out. 95% of my friends are white while my best friend is a Puerto Rican like me. After awhile you just dont give a flying **** on what others think of you and you just do what you think works best for you.

Thank God it was black kids vice white kids. We would never hear the end of it.

No one will be attacked by me for stating an honest opinion, whether or not I agree.:) (unless it's obvious that you're just trying to piss people off, then it's not worth the time and effort)

It is all about culture.

Indeed. The sad part of the whole issue is that giving equal rights to anyone, no matter the race or culture, will ensure that they perceive they are equal. Until one understands his own value and importance, he cannot overcome the things on which his hatred are based. Until one does whatever it takes to earn self-respect, he will not feel respected. Many people do not understand that they key to being able to love others is to first love and accept yourself.

There is no such thing as reverse-racism

Where's the media? Where's the outcry of support for the "South Philadelphia 23", the way there was for the "Jena 6", six blacks who actually beat someone, rather then being the victims of a racist attack (regardless of the fairness of their sentencing)?

Or how about some Asian groups organize to deal with this? The only groups that are currently making any really effort to rectify the situation are some pretty low key local Asian groups (South Philadelphia Vietnamese groups and the China Town association). Again I have to compare the reactions between this and the "Jena 6"...six blacks actually assaulted someone and became a cause celebre among black "activists" (although I do agree with some points regarding the inappropriate severity of the sentencing) versus 23 Asians who were assaulted themselves after having to suffer in an on-going environment of racist hostility. And it's on page 2 of the local newspaper (to be fair the development of the situation was also on the cover of a local indie free weekly- weeks before this incident, in hindsight that was some excellent journalism that people should have payed more attention to).

I think this country's concept of racism was basically formed in reaction to the South's segregation, and it lacks a subtly required to process the racism prevalent in Northern multi-cultural cities.

Americans are used to the paradigm of "one large minority with political control abusing a small disenfranchised minority". That scenario legitimately existed in the Jim Crow south, however in large cities lots of small minorities that are all equally disenfranchised can be quite racist towards each other.

However, even that scenario isn't applicable here.

Philadelphia is about 45% black (and in public schools this population is even more dominant, due to the fact that many whites in this city are Irish or Italian who typically send their kids to Catholic schools) and about 10% Asian. Furthermore, the city's mayor and much of its political establishment (excepting the police, which has consistently been dominated by Irish and Italians) is black. The head of schools and a great deal (going totally from personal experience because there aren't available statistics) of the teachers are black. So there's an argument to be made here that the kind of racism found at this high school could be somewhat compared to Jim Crow style institutional racism.

Now, I don't think the mayor or city council is racist against Asians, and I doubt the black teachers are personally biased against Asians, however it seems totally reasonable to me that they're biased towards fellow blacks. Which I think is a major contributing factor here.

This, for me, is the final outrage. Philadelphia is a city that with a decreasing population and stagnant employment. Asian immigrants that come here and start small businesses are exactly what the city needs. Al I have to say, is that as a white person, blacks are not doing themselves a favor by making me choose between them and Asians.

Absoloutely.....;)

The media wouldn't touch this story with a 10 ft. poll. Probably some form of hate crime if they do.

“It is our opinion that South Philadelphia High School is still not a safe place for us,” read the statement. “Because we are Asian immigrants, we are targeted. We have been working with the school a long time, but the school has failed to provide a concrete plan to address our safety inside and outside the building.”

I'm frankly astounded the youths were not charged and arrested with assault. Bullying alone could get you in trouble with the police in UK as it falls under harrassment.

I'm also surprised that a group with a history like the African Americans would be receptive to racism seeing they suffered through it enough. You'd think they would learn how much damage it causes and why do I have a sneaking suspicion if it was whites beating up blacks until they were too scared to go to school, half your country would be in uproar

No offense, but that's very naive. Blacks are just as racist as anyone else.

That's not a suspicion, that's a fact.

Why is it naive to have the expectation that history affects behaviour? Especially seeing African American's history of racism is within living memory for some people.

Racism is widespread in USA. Thats all I have to say.

Because obviously you have never spent time around to many different people. Or, at least you haven't spent much time around Americans of different races. I'm mixed. I caught more hell from blacks than I ever did from whites. It was usually because I wasn't black enough, or because I acted white.

From my perspective, you idea is very naive.
