You look at all the public figures in the past decade who have suffered economic and reputation loss as a result of being branded a racist for some off color remark. I think you will have very "white washed" results in that regard.

Meanwhile, you have public figures that are ethnic minorities that make an entire career and brand from instigating racial tension, hyping racial disparity, and using racially charged inflammatory language.

This dichotomy is so apparent and accepted that there are social theories that not only name it and explain it but go so far as to legitimize the double standard.

How many people reading this are familiar with the term "white man's burden"?

Even more pointedly, how many of us accept it as just being how it is and something we are obligated to believe?
True, and as long as the double standard is allowed to exist, equality will never be reached. (Equality would put Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton out of business, so they perpetuate it).

The problem with the black community these days is that virtually nothing else can be done for them. 99 percent of their problems now lie within their community, lack of family structure, and complete disinterest in taking education seriously. No amount of money or legislation can fix that. It's up to them, as Bill Cosby has tried to tell them only to be shunned for saying it out loud.

I agree 100%. But we have a social obstacle that was created along with other social demons such as affirmative action and hate crime legislation. That obstacle is that we have stifled honest debate and discussion in favor of a idealogical tyranny in the form of political correctness. Our extreme reaction to the barbarism of true racism has brought us to the other end of the spectrum where we've been conditioned as a people to not point out any negatives inherent in a group.

But the fact of the matter is, stereotypes are usually founded in truths to start with. All there is to a stereotype is holding a magnifying lense up to a common bad characteristic in a group and expanding that trait to comical proportions. But at the heart of the issue, the stereotype is grounded in some truth.

Also, we have a negative reaction to identification of negative traits being acknowledged as a group issue because we are a hyperindividualized society. We have this fear that if traits can be profiled to that group, then they can be profiled to "my" group and that would diminish "my" individuality.

It's a very nasty and systemic problem that is probably going to take either drastic and cataclysmic upheaval or a hundred or so years to eradicate.

If we started reversing it today. If keep ingraining these ideas in our society, it may become hardwired as part of our weltanschauung.

I take issue with the notion that just because racism has been (mostly) purged at the policy level, that it doesn't exist at the social level. The whole reason behind things like affirmative action and policies like it is to have a trickle-down social effect, but it isn't working. You have to separate policy from social reality at this point. Notions based on race still exist everywhere.

Based on the first few posts, you would think that Asians are such sweet, innocent people who don't get sucked into the mind trap of categorically summing people up based on their skin colour. They are some of the biggest racists I have ever met, it's just that the way they go about it is not so blatant and violent. They segregate themselves out of cultural superiority, especially East Asians with their filial perceptions of how society should operate. I can certainly recall times when my first generation Canadian friends brought me to their homes, only to have their parents later ask them why they're hanging out with a "white devil".

There are real problems plaguing society as a result of racism. I don't claim to be the expert on them all, but let's not pretend that things are perfect. They are far from it. The blacks beat up the whites, the whites beat up the blacks; it's fashionable to be against the current enemy of the regime, in this case Muslims; in street prostitution and sex trafficking, the vast majority of women who are coerced into it and suffer terrible cruelty and violence are women of colour.

I am sick to death of PC non-sense because it obscures the real racial issues going on. The white man hasn't been beaten down. He is stronger than ever. Our society is all about whitey. The bankers are all white. The economists, politicians, and people who hold power are white. Big whoop, Obama is coloured. I have news for you, Obama is not BLACK. A person from the Congo is BLACK. The same reason why people look upon Asians and Brahmins from India with similar approval is because their skin is LIGHT.

Go to a foreign country where you will be a minority for being white, and people will treat you like the imperialists taught them to think: that you are a rich, privileged, eloquent, beautiful, educated person. Yes, white people have it so bad. Our superiority complex is worldwide, especially now because of globalization and the exporting of our culture everywhere.

Just because you see pet social projects favoring coloured people, doesn't mean they are suddenly being elevated above you. Yeah, let's talk about "white rights"... it's called: every era of human history.

White paranoia is also a product of racially divided thinking.

I think that that is all true, but I don't see how you addressed my question. Whites have it all; why would they need advancement? It's blacks who are suffering in racist America.

What do whites have all of? We have black and white presidents. We have black and white business owners, land owners, corporate execs, athletes, celebrities...

Is there some perception that being born white is being born into a legacy of financial success and social mobility?

Really so where did you come to that conclusion? Try being a latino with the immigration debate still going on. You dont see whites asking blacks if they speak english or if they have their green card. Both races accuse us of taking their jobs though and oh course my personal favorite being called a terrorist since we have the same skin color as Arabs.

I don't even think that last part is racism as much as it is just dumbasses being dumbasses. And we can all agree that it's O.K. to be bigotted toward dumbasses.

But you can't even have a group of assumedly (because let's face it, we don't know the races of each other over the interwebz) white guys talking on the internet about race issues we face without a disparaging comment being thrown at them implying they're holding some kind of Klan rally and burning crosses.

Someone like liblady would have a cranial explosion if someone were to create an NAAWP or a United Caucasian College Fund or a Anglo Saxxon Student Union. But God forbid she recognize the blatant doubles standard for what it is. And if you can get that type to recognize the double standard, usually they will fall all over themselves making excuses for the double standard's legitimacy.

(And no offense to liblady who is actually a class act...she just happened to be the one that chimed in illustrating my point)

But the at the heart of the matter, there is a double standard there and there is no reason for that double standard.
I was away from my computer for a while and thought about that exact same thing.

IMO, that same double standard does more harm to blacks than good. It's been my observation that the honchos of the Civil Rights Industry and white Libbos have provided that crutch for blacks and convinced them that it's ok to decry, "but, I'm black", everytime things don't go their way.

I would love to see those same white Libbos work in a mostly black environment and see how much equal oppurtunity they receive. I've been discriminated against by blacks and hispanics many-a-time both in the service and in my civilian jobs. Anyone that say it doesn't happen is either a stay at home parent, or works in an all white work place.

I don't know the precise statistics (I just looked and could only find the following interesting paragraph from some random blog)...

Quite apart from the black "stars" whom Becker mentions, there is a large and thriving black middle- and upper-middle class. The income gap, and the related gaps in longevity, law-abidingness, education, and family stability, are due to the disproportionate incidence of social disorder among blacks, creating a large black "underclass" that drags black average-income statistics down.
The Becker-Posner Blog: The Black-White Income Differential--Posner's Comment

I don't think it is just a perception. I think that there is a higher percentage of poor blacks compared to total blacks, than poor whites compared to total whites. So I feel there truly is an income gap. But the perception is what would cause people to go huh? if they heard about a NAAWP.

I think it can also be said that while some programs have really helped the advancement of blacks, the military being one of these, there are other programs that don't seemed to have helped at all and they are the ones that cast the black community as a victim. This is where I see the NAACP. Quickest out the gate to point the finger at racism. Weren't they involved in the recent Gates scandal?

Of course you don't, because most blacks are natural born citizens. That's a lame argument. If most blacks only spoke Swahili and had illegally immigrated from Africa, it would be a different story.

Try making a delivery to a company where the Mexicans working there suddenly don't speak English when you show up. Then, ignore you, because you don't speak Spanish. Is that the best way to try and get along with people? I mean, because race relations is a two way street.
