Hoist your colors, sir! You earned it! Drive on!

RICHMOND, Va. — A 90-year-old Medal of Honor recipient can keep his 21-foot flagpole in his front yard after a homeowner's association dropped its request to remove it, a spokesman for Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said Tuesday.

One of the main reasons I hate homeowner associations. I was lucky enough to move in to my house just as the homeowners association where I lived was disbanded.

Glad he won!

I'm glad he won too, but covenants are covenants.

Yeah, but if they get too strict the people of the HOA should be allowed to revolt.

HOA are ridiculous. I refuse to live in a neighborhood that tells me what color I can paint my house, what trees I'm allowed to plant...or whether I can have a flag pole in my yard.

It is obvious a lot of you are clueless when it comes to a HOA.....The people that are members of the association make the rules..........If they don't like it they can vote it out..........Its obvious that most of the members of this association were Liberals who hate this country and our military.....This poor guy just bought a home in the wrong area...........I am glad he won out............

You'd fit right in then wouldn't you Navy? :doh

Why would you assume any of what you wrote. In my experience, HOA people don't have political agendas, just strong opinions on asthetics.

Well you sign them as part of buying your home. So you know them up front. I know this because my neighborhood has them, and flag poles other than on the side of your home are not allowed.

I noticed the HOA was unavailable for comment. To me this means they ran into the buzz saw of public opinion and I am glad it happened.

Too bad our current Messiah & dictator and his devils disciples don't give a damn about what WE THE PEOPLE think, want, or need.

I am very happy about this for the hero.

WTF does Obama and his administration have to do with this Homeowners Association? Way to go with the partisan hackery.

A person buying a house should be allowed to not join the HOA if he desires. The seller should not be penalized or otherwise forced by the HOA to force the buyer into joining.

in other words, the HOA membership for communities of single family houses, not condos or townhouses, should be on a voluntary basis with any member able to withdraw without penalty.

Come on, people, what the hell has happened to America when your neighbors can control the color you paint your house, your gardening choices, and your basketball backboard, let alone you flag pole!

Totally agree. I am on the board of directors of my HOA. I would NEVER EVER cave in this circumstance. Sorry, you agreed to the rules when you bought your house. YOU LOSE.

If I were on the BoD, I wouldn't make such silly ass rules. as not allowing flag poles in one's yard.

HOA's are the same as the historical neighborhoods. If you live in an historical district, you can't just use any building material to fix up your house. Talk about added expense to live in an old Victorian home. I own my own farm and have few neighbors. You can't beat that kind of neighborhood, or lack thereof.

I saw similar remarks from the left when Bush was President.

When any CMOH, regardless of rank, walks into a room, wearing the Medal of Honor, he is accorded the highest military respect. If he is a buck private, they must render proper military courtesy by saluting him. That is more respect than he gets from the HOA.

The HOA didn't make him move into that neighborhood. And respect isn't demanded. It is earned. :2wave:

So what? Does that somehow excuse blaming Obama for this homeowners association?

Luckily I have not had to live in an area that has an HOA, but out of curiosity where is their power to dictate derived from?

While I agree that this aspect of HOA's is dumb, membership is only required in areas where neighbors share ownership of something. For example, you live outside the city limits, and the neighborhood owns a sewer system. If the HOA did not exist, who would own it and maintain it?

This is merely a comparison to whichever party's candidate is in the Whitehouse. These things occur all the time in every argument. I wouldn't worry about them.

I would think the people in the particular community elect HOA representatives, who then meet and enact certain rules. Not all these rules are good rules, such as the one about denying flag poles.

Yes, that is what happens. They also discuss, probobly more importantly, collecting dues to pay for certain community servicies. For example, paying to maintain the neighborhoood's road, sewer, etc. They also can be used to represent the community in any legal disputes. For example, a contractor illegally taping into a communities sewer system. This, in my opinion, is the real reason for HOA's, the flagpole thing is out of line.

Yeah, we did the same with government though. We created it through a contract, we know the natural course there of. But we still reserve the right to revolt should the government act too grievously for too long against our rights and liberties.

Plus, I like armed revolt.
