"President Barack Obama outlined new multibillion-dollar stimulus and jobs proposals Tuesday, saying the nation must continue to 'spend our way out of this recession' until more Americans are back at work.

Without giving a price tag, Obama proposed a package of new spending for highway, bridge and other infrastructure projects, deeper tax breaks for small businesses and tax incentives to encourage people to make their homes more energy efficient."

"Obama did not say how much his proposals would cost, although congressional Democrats are eyeing a $70 billion package to help create jobs and to provide aid to hard-pressed state and local governments. Administration aides suggested that the part of the package dealing with roads, bridges and other infrastructure could total about $50 billion."

Seems that this means the package from last winter is a failure. We have already spent too much money, it is not working.

Would spending more government money help the economy or hurt it? Is the package from last winter a failure?

Are you against infrastructure spending and tax breaks for small businesses? In this economic climate, i know i'm not.

Not at all,I'm against this slush fund being used to bribe Congress into doing Obama's bidding.

But I also thought that he was going to cut the deficit in half. Or is it the old Bush ploy where you predict some rediculous growth and then come in under that growth once enough factors...like the Iraq war say...are swept under the rug and claim a reduction? Not that it's an actual reduction, just that we came in under predicted values.

You realize that Congress appropriates funds, not the President, right?

Tax cuts, yea, do that.

More spending? Hell no.

Spending creates jobs.

And increases the debt, and devalues the dollar, and creates bubbles, and distorts self-correction.

Tax cuts don't in the short run.

Thinking in the short-term economically is what got us into this mess in the first place.

True. But it's too late. We're in the short term now, in a crisis, and we have to think that way. I don't like it either.

Spending creates jobs. Tax cuts don't in the short run. I'm trying to find the report I saw that rating stimulative effects of tax cuts vs. spending. In the meantime, I did find this:

Report: No Correlation Between Bush Tax Cuts and Job Creation | United for a Fair Economy

How about this quote:

"While there is no evidence that massive tax cuts create jobs, there is considerable evidence that they contribute to economy-choking deficits."

If you think this report is legitimate, then perhaps you should consider their assertion in the context of spending increases.

I thought we the taxpayers were supposed to be paid back on our investment with interest?

That's the bailout. Good news:

Bernanke: Fed will make profit on bailout
Fed Chairman says he's confident the Fed will be paid back for loans made; sees moderate economic growth in 2010.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke said Monday he's confident the Federal Reserve will make money on the trillions it has pumped into the economy since the start of 2008.

No, not really.

The crisis is long over and the economy is already showing signs of improvement. There is no need for another stimulus.

You also realize they plan on illegally using tarp for things it was not authorized for.

Doesn't change the facts in my post, does it?

If it's illegal, Congress can step in.

No, not really.

You're kidding, right? So the stimulus worked? Please tell that to all the whiners who say the stimulus isn't working, okay?

Yet you want tax cuts? What for?

1. congress spends, it's true, but the president leads, sets the agenda

2. or you haven't heard of health care, cap and trade, wall street regulatory reform...

3. his every move reveals his OWN AWARENESS that the stimulus didn't work

4. his only answer is---more of the same

5. he's completely lost

6. he just makes this crap up as he goes along

7. worst, he LOOKS clueless

Uh, okay.

Bingo!

BINGGGG-GO!

No coincidence at all that this scam pops up as Congress and the Senate are discussing ways to destroy America's health care industry. The word is plain....the Congressman who votes against Messiah-Care is not going to get a piece of this new slush fund.

Uh, okay.

good comeback

if obama is so confident that we've turned the corner, that things are getting better, why this desperate need on his part to DO SOMETHING?

confident leaders at this point say---stay the course

haven't you ever heard a brave man or woman, knowing what he or she was doing, say that, stay the course?

can you even imagine obama going THERE?

LOL!

The point is it is supposed to go back to the treasury.

Obama claims more spending and then says he can cut the Bush deficit in half. What about the fact he has already tripled it. More double talk from Obama.

They tried to spend their way out in the great depression but that did not work WW2 got us out of the depression. It did not work then and will not work now.
