E-mails hacked from a climate research institute suggest climate change does not have a human cause, according to Saudi Arabia's lead climate negotiator.

Mohammad Al-Sabban told BBC News that the issue will have a "huge impact" on next week's UN climate summit, with countries unwilling to cut emissions.

Scientists say the e-mails from the University of East Anglia do not alter the picture of man-made warming.

Meanwhile, India has set a target for curbing the rise in its CO2 emissions.

Environment minister Jairam Ramesh pledged to cut India's emissions intensity - the amount of greenhouse gases produced for every unit of GDP - by 20-25% by 2020, "if we get support from the international community".

Human impact denied

The e-mails issue arose two weeks ago when hundreds of messages between scientists at the university's Climatic Research Unit (CRU) and their peers around the world were posted on the world wide web, along with other documents.

It appears that the material was hacked or leaked; a police investigation has yet to reveal which.

CRU maintains one of the world's most important datasets on how global temperatures have changed.

Climate "sceptics" have claimed that the e-mails undermine the scientific case for climate change being caused by humanity's greenhouse gas emissions, dubbing the issue "ClimateGate".

But it has not until now materialised as an issue likely to influence the Copenhagen negotiations, which are supposed to agree a new global deal on combating climate change to supplant the Kyoto Protocol.

Saudi Arabia is an influential member of the G77/China bloc which leads the "developing world" side in many elements of the UN negotiations.

Mr Al-Sabban made clear that he expects it to derail the single biggest objective of the summit - to agree limitations on greenhouse gas emissions.

I believe its happening, of course, but ive never believed it was because of us. Maybe this will clean up the misconception that the e-mails said Global warming IS NOT happening when as a matter of fact the e-mails suggested IT WAS happening, but not because of Humans.

Studies say it's warming then studies say it's cooling. Fact is Studies of mans influence are coming out thousands of years too soon to tell an accurate story. We just haven't been here longer enough to know. If you look at the weather history of the planet it has heated up plenty of time before we even got here.

Then it cooled down with out our help. This idea that Cap and Trade will do any good is as big a HOAX as has ever come along.

The thing is this environmentally ill wackos like Obama and Gore (who is in hiding right now) are going to pretend the emails never existed and go about their HOAX as planned.

If that data was worth a damn, they wouldn't have to fudge it.

So the biggest oil producer in the world says that the hacked e-mail's will have an impact.. like he is unbiased...

As unbiased as a UEA professor. :rofl

Frankly yes. The Saudis and all other oil producers are against this summit and what it might achieve because it will effect them financially.

Not to mention this whole "scandal" is very suspicious. You do know that the evidence is that it was Russians who hacked the webserver right? And do the Russians have a vested interest in keeping the status quo? yes or no?

Those pesky Russians!

Irrelevant, the profs already admitted to the accuracy of the emails. You do know that don't you? FAIL

And so what? There has been an admittance by one person as far as I know that the e-mails were his, but taken out of context... not to mention a decade old. It still does not change the fact that they were illegally obtained by unknown parties and not all emails have been verified as genuine yet. I will wait for the investigation before claiming a "smoking gun", unlike you and your right wing cohorts.

But that does not change the fact that the Saudi representative has a vested interest in derailing anything that can hit his country on the bottom line and keep countries addicted to oil.

The UK met office will this week release the raw data used in most reports on global warming.. so now we will be able to see those too... want to try to debunk those if they prove you wrong?

No one's unbiased in this. This guy isn't completely unbiased. Neither are scientists whose research grants, reputation and fame amongst colleagues, and social standing rely on AGW to be true to continue their research and continue to get their grants.

Keep working that defibrillator. If you shock that study enough, maybe it'll regain some life.

Just because they haven't been verified by a source you like, doesn't make them invalid. I'm just so sure that they broke into the network an stole invalid emails and other documents, when could have easily made them all up and just posted them on the internet. You're reaching.

If only they saw that we need more algae to eat up more CO2...

Even if they were obtained unlawfully, does not make them false.....;)
Oil will always be a commodity until a real substitute that can be used in personal transportation can be found....;)
There's big money at stake, now matter which way this goes....
Not to mention this country's future.....:(

I'm sure that of the dozens of people who's emails were released, all those that were faked have said so haven't they??

No?? Why not??

Phil Jones at CRU, the main character in this debacle, has gotten over $9 million in research money in the past decade. Does he have a vested interest??

If it is the TRUE raw data, we'll see. I have my doubts that they will release anything. Why did they fight its release for years??

You should be more careful to describe your point. A great many people believe in Global Warming and Global Cooling for that matter. The debate is centered around Anthropogenic Global Warming, which has now morphed to Climate Change. Fact is that most people know that climate change occurs quite independent of mankind.

Of course its happening independant of mankind. Quiet simply because its happened before (well before mankind or cows).

Climategate is probably one of the first major signs of the end of yet another Liberal crisis. We will probably start seeing a continual increase in the population of skeptics.

It is one thing to chart changes related to climate. But to make the kind of predictions we've heard over the past couple decades is purely the stuff of hype, hysteria and political agenda. However, I think Copenhagen will maintain a stiff upper lip and continue with its fear campaign.

I agree and point out it has not been a good year for the AGW crowd. The US Meteorological Society began debunking the "consensus" argument, public polling shows the public is growing deeply skeptical about AGW claims and the money grab around it in general. This was before the inconvenient discovery of these emails compiled for a British FOIA inquiry and removed from a public server.:doh
