But whatever to attack the right winger du jour.
Not my fault Huckabee's a rightie. I'd hold the same view if the gov at the time was a leftie.

Huckabee saw an excessive sentence and commuted it to 50 years, what he saw as a violation of the 8th amendment of the US constitution...

He did not parole the guy, just commuted the sentence to 50 years....

Yeah they let the savage out early, but jeeze, you can't blame huckabee for the actions of this savage.... Its pure partisan hackery.

105 years for burguraly and robbery is a violation of the 8th amendment, as a libertarian I am suprised you don't agree...

He's a repeat offender. He wasn't convicted for a one off crime. His total sentence was the result of five felony convictions.

    8th amendment doesn't apply.

    Here's part of my issue.

I already said I disagree with the excessively large number of pardons and commutations Huckabee gave out.

    With that said though....

How many of those individuals in a similar situation that had excessively long sentences that Huckabee commuted ended up going forth and being productive, healthy members of society that may have actually helped or even saved lives of other people.

Does Huckabee get equal credit for them?

Someone earlier said during his time Huckabee did what, somewhere around 600 pardon's or commutations.

Horrible consequences have came out about 2 of them.

lets say even 10% of the ones he did such acts for ended up being not just productive, but helpful and valued members of their community. That'd be 60 people.

Since it "started" with Huckabee with them, would you be giving him praises for all those people as well or would he still have been "interfering with the process" and absolutely wrong?

Are you all simply against any and all commutations and paroles? If so, that's fine, understandable view, just trying to understand this.

It seems though that unlike some of you that seem to be mind readers (since you know the ONLY reason Huckabee did this was becuase the guy claimed to be a christian) that Huckabee can't read minds and had to make judgement calls.

That doesn't excuse him when the judgement calls go bad.

but it also doesn't mean you should come down on him like he's almost personally responsable for these murders while saying almost nothing about anyone else that made bad judgement calls along the way

    It's a sad display.
Just to make the point...and some of us on the left have defended him, despite not liking him. It's not because I like what he did(in his shoes, I don't think I would commute or pardon often if at all, I think if you do the crime, you do the time, law and order liberal that I am), but because I think if you are in a position to make big decisions on a daily bases, some are going to have unexpected repercussions. I don't think he acted poorly, just that in the fullness of time, looking back, with more information than he had, it's easy to judge, but from his position at the time, he did not have all that we know now.

Again, it's sad that something as nonpolitical as this is being twisted into a political issue.

I'm not a fan of the idea of pardons, clemency, commutations and such.

And when it comes to first degree murder I would execute virtually all of them unless there were some really massive circumstances to consider.

    But.

Under existing law, what Governor Huckabee did was not wrong by any standard and not an unreasonable act.

Nor should anyone hold him responsible for acts people commit YEARS later.

While it sounds self centered, in regards to Dumond and Clemmons, Huckabee did his duty as governor as neither of those men committed their most notable crimes in the state of Arkansas after being released.
