4 Police Officers Shot Dead Near Washington State Air Force Base

yes, just as they may have been taken out because their law enforcement activities made someone uncomfortable, it is possible they may have been abusing their police authority. but until we find that out, it is unseemly to jump to that conclusion

this very instance betrays your argument in the defense of handguns. those law enforcement officers also had handguns on their persons, which weapons did them no good. my submission is that the presence of handguns by the perps - rather than long guns - is what allowed them to get so close to their targets to unleash the ambush

Or...the shooter could have parked his car across the street, waited until they were leaving, and took them out with this perfectly acceptable anti-handgun lobby approved Remington 7400 semi-automatic hunting rifle.

Or maybe this beautiful Browning BAR (not the military version, the civilian hunting rifle).

The problem here is not handguns. It's violent people who want to kill cops. This man was determined. I'm much more afraid of a deranged man whose good with a long gun than I am of a deranged man with with high cap handgun. You have to get close with most handguns.

As a cop it was the potential shooter who was 300 yards away that made me worry. I am very proficient with a handgun, but after 15 to 25 yards I'm begging for a long gun.

I get your gun control slant... Well, not really.....
Even if it was a legally carried hand gun, it has no relavance....

If someone was going to shoot four cops, I don't think they would worrry that a permit was neccessary to carry said gun.....
Your arguement is weak, at best.....;)

Oh no, I agree with you again.....:3oops:

This is a very good point. Gun control laws only keep honest people honest. The bad guys don't care about laws period. They know most citizens will refuse to carry concealed weapons if it is illegal for them to do so.

In this day and age it is my opinion that responsible, law abiding citizens should arm themselves. I posted this somewhere else on here, but I carry and take my family (wife, sons, and daughters) to the range as often as I can. My wife and oldest daughter are getting ready to take their concealed carry weapon class so they can get their permit. I had hoped for them to get it sooner but the classes got rescheduled by the instructors for some reason.

If you can carry, do so. I can't say this enough.

Arkansas Republican Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.
Looks Like Fox news pundit has some explaining to do.
"This is the day I've been dreading for a long time," Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas' Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings.

Clemmons' criminal history includes at least five felony convictions in Arkansas and at least eight felony charges in Washington. The record also stands out for the number of times he has been released from custody despite questions about the danger he posed.

Clemmons had been in jail in Pierce County for the past several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child.

He was released from custody just six days ago, even though he was wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas and was staring at eight felony charges in all out of Washington state.

Clemmons posted $15,000 with a Chehalis company called Jail Sucks Bail Bonds. The bondsman, in turn, put up $150,000, securing Clemmons' release on the pending child-rape charge.

Clemmons lives in Tacoma, where he has run a landscaping and power-washing business out of his house, according to a police interview with his wife earlier this year.

He was married, but the relationship was tumultuous, with accounts of his unpredictable behavior leading to at least two confrontations with police earlier this year.

During the confrontation in May, Clemmons punched a sheriff's deputy in the face, according to court records. As part of that incident, he was charged with seven counts of assault and malicious mischief.

In another instance, Clemmons was accused of gathering his wife and young relatives around at 3 or 4 in the morning and having them all undress. He told them that families need to "be naked for at least 5 minutes on Sunday," a Pierce County sheriff's report says.

"The whole time Clemmons kept saying things like trust him, the world is going to end soon, and that he was Jesus," the report says.

As part of the child-rape investigation, the sheriff's office interviewed Clemmons' sister in May. She told them that "Maurice is not in his right mind and did not know how he could react when contacted by Law Enforcement," a sheriff's report says.

"She stated that he was saying that the secret service was coming to get him because he had written a letter to the President. She stated his behavior has become unpredictable and erratic. She suspects he is having a mental breakdown," the report says.

Deputies also interviewed other family members. They reported that Clemmons had been saying he could fly and that he expected President Obama to visit to "confirm that he is Messiah in the flesh."

Prosecutors in Pierce County were sufficiently concerned about Clemmons' mental health that they asked to have him evaluated at Western State Hospital. Earlier this month, on Nov. 6, a psychologist concluded that Clemmons was competent to stand trial on the child-rape and other felony charges, according to court records.

Clemmons moved Washington in 2004, after being released from prison in Arkansas, state Department of Corrections records indicate. That would mean he had gone five years or so before landing in serious trouble with authorities here, according to a review of his criminal record.

Clemmons started Sea-Wash Pressure Washing Landscaping with his wife, Nicole Smith, in October 2005. The license for the business expired last month.

Long history of trouble in Arkansas

News accounts out of Arkansas offer a confusing — and, at times, conflicting — description of Clemmons' criminal history and prison time.

In 1990, Clemmons, then 18, was sentenced in Arkansas to 60 years in prison for burglary and theft of property, according to a news account. Newspaper stories describe a series of disturbing incidents involving Clemmons while he was being tried in Arkansas on various charges.

During one trial, Clemmons was shackled in leg irons and seated next to a uniformed officer. The presiding judge ordered the extra security because he felt Clemmons had threatened him, court records show.

Another time, Clemmons hid a hinge in his sock, and was accused of intending to use it as a weapon. Yet another time, Clemmons took a lock from a holding cell, and threw it toward the bailiff. He missed and instead hit Clemmons' mother, who had come to bring him street clothes, according to records and published reports.

On another occasion, Clemmons had reached for a guard's pistol during transport to the courtroom.

When Clemmons received the 60-year sentence, he was already serving 48 years on five felony convictions and facing up to 95 more years on charges of robbery, theft of property and possessing a handgun on school property. Records from Clemmons' sentencing described him as 5-foot-7 and 108 pounds. The crimes were committed when he was 17.

Clemmons served 11 years before being released.

News accounts say Huckabee then commuted Clemmons' sentence, citing Clemmons' young age at the time the crimes were committed.

But Clemmons remained on parole — and soon after landed in trouble again. In March 2001, he was accused of violating his parole by committing aggravated robbery and theft, according to a story in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazzette.

He was returned to prison on a parole violation. But in what appears to have been a mistake, Clemmons was not actually served with the arrest warrants until leaving prison three years later. As a result, Clemmons' attorney argued that the charges should be dismissed because too much time had passed. Prosecutors dropped the charges.

It appears that Clemmons remained in trouble with Arkansas authorities even after moving away. This year, while Clemmons was living in Washington, a warrant was issued for his arrest, accusing him of being a fugitive from Arkansas.

Well that's the liberals for ya...wait...ummmmm.

Anyway. This guy should have not been on the streets period. Our justice system had put him away, but for some reason the political system let him go before his time was up.

Just another tragic twist to this story.

SWAT has him surrounded down on Yesler.....;)
I wonder why he came up to Seattle?......
He's holed up not to far from where the other officer was executed last month....

Can someone rewrite your constitution and remove the gun part.

Too late ..too many guns out there. You can't put the genie back in the bottle.

Besides, it's not needed. This idiot should never have been given clemency by Huckabee in the first place. Bad guys need to serve full sentences for their crimes. Letting them out early has consequences ..in this case, 4 dead police officers. Wonder how Huckabee is sleeping tonight?

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.

"This is the day I've been dreading for a long time," Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas' Pulaski County said tonight when informed that Clemmons was being sought for questioning in connection with the killings.

Huckabee's office releases statement about police killings

The senseless and savage execution of police officers in Washington State has saddened the nation, and early reports indicate that a person of interest is a repeat offender who once lived in Arkansas and was wanted on outstanding warrants here and in Washington State. The murder of any individual is a profound tragedy, but the murder of a police officer is the worst of all murders in that it is an assault on every citizen and the laws we live within.

Should he be found to be responsible for this horrible tragedy, it will be the result of a series of failures in the criminal justice system in both Arkansas and Washington State. He was recommended for and received a commutation of his original sentence from 1990, this commutation made him parole eligible and he was then paroled by the parole board once they determined he met the conditions at that time. He was arrested later for parole violation and taken back to prison to serve his full term, but prosecutors dropped the charges that would have held him. It appears that he has continued to have a string of criminal and psychotic behavior but was not kept incarcerated by either state. This is a horrible and tragic event and if found and convicted the offender should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Our thoughts and prayers are and should be with the families of those honorable, brave, and heroic police officers.

So Huckabee is yet again covering his ass... but this aint the first time.

Wayne Dumond ring a bell? A serial rapist that among others raped a relation to Bill Clinton. He was released 25 years before the end of his sentence and despite warnings that he would re-offend, Huckabee released him. What did Dumond do.. go out and assault and rape a pregnant woman.

There are other questionable pardons done by dear Huck.

Willie Horton II...permanent clemency's a damn sight worse than a weekend furlough though, innit? :rofl

i disagree
if someone is found with a handgun on their person
put them away for a very long time
of itself, that will not get rid of handguns, but it will heavily reduce the numbers that are carried at any given time

and yes, while i have no problem with long guns, we should similarly prohibit the possession of automatic weapons

so, if these two characters had shown up on the scene carrying long arms, would they have gotten the drop on the law enforcement officers?

I see the hoplophobic sheep are all up and whining about law abiding citizens and trying to attach them to this/these dirtbags....

One suspect and yes. It's late fall, cold, and rainy in the Pacific Northwest. You could easily conceal a "bullpup" semi-auto rifle or a "sawed-off" shotgun under a coat and not draw any attention to yourself.

its not just dumond huck has a history of pardons that have gone wrong. Wade Stewart was given clemency by huck after murdering a 25 year old he then went on to rob a hooker using his .38. Huck pardoned and commuted more prisoners than the previous 3 governors over 18 years. From 1996 to 2004 he helped free more prisoners than the six neighboring states: louisiana, mississippi, missouri, oklahoma, tennessee, and texas combined. It seems huck has several willie hortons now

No, he just would have shot from 250 yds.......
The thing I find scary is how many people are begging to be forced to dis arm.....

what's scary is the folks who refuse to recognize that this scenario developed because of the availability of handguns

had the long gun been a better means to effect this ambush, then that would have been the weapon of choice

(non automatic) long guns are effective defensive weapons. handguns are offensive weapons. ignore the difference at your own peril

This is dumb....

So what of the dc "snipers".... FAIL

What's scarier is that you think a "law" would have kept a handgun out of his hands. Geez.

Let's see, it's against the "law" to kill someone, but he did it. So you think he would follow a handgun law, but not that whole murdering law thing.
