Just last year the blasphemy laws in the United Kingdom (making it illegal to insult Christianity) was finally repealed by Parliament and taken off the books. The last time it was used was in 1977, so not exactly 'ages' ago.

Australia, Spain, Israel, Ireland, UK (was in part abolished in 2008 in Wales and England.. not Scotland and Northern Ireland), Austria, Canada, Finland, India, Greece and many more all have blasphemy laws on the books.

But yes many of them stem from a time where religion actually influenced those countries.. but that does not change the fact that attempts in many of those countries to remove them from the books have failed due to pressure from the church, either directly or indirectly.

    Wow.
You'd think it would be abolished for all of UK.

Correction: It was abolished in Wales and England last year
I remember when some tried to use these blasphemy laws against that Jerry Springer opera

How many of the above countries execute people for blasphemy like they do in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran? In Afghanistan a man just had his death sentence overturned and instead was given 20 years in prison. He was a journalism student accused of blasphemy for asking questions in class about women's rights under Islam.

    Now or in the past?

Now, very few.. since most dont have the death penalty and the laws are not used. In the past, tons of people.. even in the good old USA.

But that does not change the fact that they are still on the books, so this fanatical targeting of some Islamic nations for having laws banning Blasphemy is nothing but more islamphobia by the right. It has been the wish of any religious organisation to have such laws on the books, because under their own laws it is a crime and their ultimate goal has been and always will be to merge their own rules into the law of the land if they can get away with it.

If you let the Christian radicals get their way, you bet in a heart beat that the blasphemy laws on the books will be put into practice again like they were 100 years ago.

Excuse me, what century do we live in? Are you saying you approve of muslim countries executing their citizens for violating blasphemy laws?

Islamophobia by the right? I am pretty sure this is not a partisan issue. Most civilized peoples regardless of their political persuasion are against blasphemy laws. Especially capital punishment for blasphemy. Get real Pete.

Hell no I never said that. In fact I am totally against such idiotic laws in any society.

I am only pointing out that not only do many "Christian" countries (and the one Jewish country also) already have these laws on the books but have used these laws for centuries. Heck in Irelands case they just put new blasphemy laws on the books and you dont get more "Christian" than Ireland at least in Europe.

So coming here and claiming that it is "only" Muslim nations that not only want and international ban but are behind some sort of push for it, is just idiotic and silly. If given the chance then the religious "aspects" of any society, Christian or Jewish would push for the exact same ban...

This should not be a discussion about "how bad the Muslims are again", but should be a discussion on how the hell we still allow religion to dictate our laws in the west as well as in the Islamic world. The only real difference is that in the west the death penalty and public flogging is illegal but the rules and laws in this case are still on the books and can be used if need be. It does not excuse us nor does it excuse the Muslim world for having local bans or wanting to have a global ban.

This is not a us against Muslim.. it is us against any religion.
