Muslim Nations Seeking International Blasphemy Ban

This must be by far the most intellectual debate that I've come across. Please carry on, it's a fascinating .

Just tell me though, how much difference is there between a Muslim fundamentalist mentality and some of the gems of wisdom that have been spread on this thread ?
Just read what the Rat has to say and ignore the rest.

What do you think? The whole idea offends my concept of free speech. Should blasphemy be grouped as hate speech?

Hate speech laws should be illegal and offends US constitutional concept of free speech. ANy one who claims to be for free speech should be against any hate speech laws. If they make a ban on Blasphemy then they are opening the door to Chrisitians and other groups who could say evolution, homosexuality and many other things are blasphemous and push for those things to be banned/considered hate speech. Then there is the strong possibility that governments could consider themselves victims of hate speech and have anti-government speech banned.

Here's a cartoon that I feel is appropriate for this thread:

I tend to agree with you, but I don't think hate crimes are a violation of freedom of speech. No speech need be involved at all, just a crime, usually violent. Hate crimes are about intent, not speech. Intent is already considered in criminal law.

Except the gun should say 'conservatives', since the particular suggestion in question is coming from Islamic countries, most of which are among the most conservative in the world.

Yes, but it is Western liberals and their perverse belief in "multiculturalism" that allow our laws and traditions to be subverted, in our own lands, in favor of Islamic tradition and law. They're the ones favoring looser standards for immigration, they're the ones saying that people who come here from other countries should continue living as they did at home, they're the ones pushing for laws to appease them by restricting our freedom to speak and write words that are offensive to them.

If there's anything wrong with the cartoon, it's that "liberalism" and "Islam" have their places reversed. Islam is the gun that the United States-- really, all of the West-- will kill itself with, while liberalism is the force that cocks the hammer and makes it easier for Uncle Sam to pull the trigger.

The funny thing is, the people who are worried about fundamental Muslims taking over are going to be the ones who benefit from it all of this. America and Europe will never be taken over by fundamentalist Muslims, but when it reaches critical mass it's going to be tomorrow's authoritarian right wing that sweeps into power-- and the level of religiosity is going to be the main thing that determines whether or not people like me are going to be swept up with it.

Really? Maybe in Europe, but freedom to speak and write is already restricted there sometimes. Not in the U.S.

You are mischaracterizing the term "liberal" here. Liberalism has to do with individual rights, whereas multiculturalism sublimates the individual to the group, and assigns the rights to the group, instead. While many deluded people who embrace multiculturalism may CALL themselves liberal, the politics they are espousing have little to do with actual liberalism, and more to do with a brand of leftist group think more akin to a cult or religion in its rigid and extremely hypocritical orthodoxy.

These are dogmatic, lockstep leftists who advocate multiculturalism, and not liberals.

People have really lost sight of what the terms liberal and conservative actually mean, haven't they? Since the "conserve" in conservatism refers to the tendency to preserve cultural institiutions, what could be more conservative than Islamism -- a political philosophy that seeks to calcify society according to ancient dictates?

Yeah, that happens about ten times a day on every single debate board in the universe.

And the ability to move into this country and have government services provided in your language aren't individual rights? The idea that other peoples' lifestyles, no matter how repulsive to us, must be tolerated isn't individual rights?

Multiculturalism is a liberal issue. It is about the individual's right to live among us without being a part of us, or in extreme form to deny that there is an "us" at all-- only a sea of individual "mes" with no affinity or obligation to one another.

While many deluded people who embrace multiculturalism may CALL themselves liberal, the politics they are espousing have little to do with actual liberalism, and more to do with a brand of leftist group think more akin to a cult or religion in its rigid and extremely hypocritical orthodoxy.

I agree that the Left isn't necessarily liberal, but from where I am sitting, almost everyone in the West-- Left or Right-- is varying degrees of liberal. The Right wants more economic and religious freedom, and the Left wants more civil liberties and freedom from cultural standards, but they are all basically liberal with the exception of a handful of hardcases at the top.

The artist should of included a bullet flying in to the mouth that had 'political correctness' sketched on its side.

Well, no. Where did you find those in the Constitution? You sound like a liberal, making up rights.

The Right wants more economic and religious freedom, and the Left wants more civil liberties and freedom from cultural standards, but they are all basically liberal with the exception of a handful of hardcases at the top.

So now the right is liberal. Okay. Shows you why all this talk of left and right and liberal and conservative is pointless, not to mention irrellevant.

It would be kind of funny to watch something like this get enacted. You gotta know the states like Iran would be breaching the guidlines all day long, and the "world court" wouldn't do anything about it.

All I can say is that is one sensitive little god them muslims worship.
