Rudy Giuliani to run for U.S. Senate; If elected may aim for White House in 2012: source

Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani has decided not to run for governor next year - but will run for U.S. Senate instead, sources told the Daily News.

A source familiar with Giuliani's thinking said the failed presidential candidate has been telling people he plans to run against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010 to fill out the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's term.

If elected, the source said, he could use that as a stepping stone to run for President in 2012 - rather than run for re-election to the Senate.

A Giuliani spokeswoman downplayed the reports. "Rudy has a history of making up his own mind and has no problem speaking it," she said. "When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own."

Sounds like a great idea, at least to the first part.

It also looks like the right call politically:

Today's Marist poll reveals Rudy Giuliani was wise to take a pass on the 2010 governor's race, but also shows he's a strong contender against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

In a hypothetical head-to-head match-up, the former mayor is way out in front of the former congresswoman, 54-40. One-third of Gillibrand's fellow Democrats say they would support Giuliani, who's also competitive in the Democrat-dominated city he once led.

Marist pollster Lee Miringoff called Giuliani's decision not to seek the executive mansion "good news" for Rick Lazio, now the GOP's lone gubernatorial contender, but "potentially a huge problem" for Gillibrand.

Awesome.

I happen to think he could do more as Gov. of NY......but it seems he has the highest office in mind, still.

Definitely not a fan of the man. But he can run for senator from the State I suppose. I wouldn't want him anywhere near the Presidency though. His penchant for police state and high documentation/data basing of people isn't something I particularly am comfortable with.

Love the man as a mayor. Would not vote for him potus

He'd get killed by Cuomo and is probably the only one with a good chance against Gillibrand.

You are probably right, and NY deserves Cuomo, they deserve everything they get, actually, save the 9/11 attacks. Goodness knows that Rudy is no liberty loving american, he is just as bad as the rest of the pols in that state, and across the country, to be fair.

I wonder how long it is before half that city is boarded up, and looks just like Detroit?

For all his faults, Cuomo has run an absolutely flawless shadow campaign so far. It gives me hope that he'll be a better governor than his father.

Never gonna happen, nor will the city even regress toward what it looked like in the early 90's. Giuliani and BBerg have done a wonderful job ensuring that things stay on the up and up. We'll undoubtedly see some marginally higher taxes, but nothing like what ruined the city in the 70's.

I live in an area that was basically uninhabitable 30 years ago, but is now home to 25 story doorman buildings and farmers markets on every corner. There's so much money invested in things staying this way that I can't imagine it will slip that far.

I am sorry to be the one who brings the bad news to you, but that will not last, and the 70's will look tame, when the commercial bubble finally bursts.:(

Again, I really doubt it, short of a wholescale collapse of our economic system.

Exactly.........but think global collapse, because we are not the only ones.....

And I doubt that will happen either, but this isn't really the thread for that.

I apologize.....this is off topic, it always is.

Rudy is too close to that Authoritarian streak but he may be the one to break up the cluster**** that is Albany. Granted Paterson has done more than our previous Governors. Im making it my job to get heavily involved in all three of the state races this time around.

It's funny, but for as terrible as Paterson has been, his polling numbers have freed him up to do things that no governor with a good shot at reelection could do. Even if I really opposed him, I couldn't get that involved in the Governor race - I promised his office that I would vote for him if he appointed someone other than Kennedy to the Senate seat, so I have to follow through on that.

Re: Rudy Giuliani to run for U.S. Senate; If elected may aim for White House in 2012:

Too bad.

Seems to me that New York would be better served by electing a Senator whose ambition is to serve the people of that state.

New York doesn't really need yet another liberal/socialist Senator.

I hear ya, picking Gillibrand was one of his high points.

I'm sorry.....I may be accused of going off topic, as usual, but why do we need these people, any of them, can anyone explain this to me?

Why do we need a government to lead us, so far they have been nothing more then a complete failure, why would we vote for more of the same? New York is done, no one trusts these crooks anymore, thus no one will turn to this city, the city that wrecked the global economy, you people need to get out fast! The poor and desperate, these people who live here, are the most in the nation, and when the dollar does collapse, you will be in great danger!

I hate to say it, but I am starting to see what drives the radical islamists, this city has a black heart, and no one is paying any attention to it!

Ron Paul was right, and I once disagreed, we have brought this on ourselves.

Just looked out my window and NY is still doing fine.

Seriously, where are you getting the idea that the city is falling apart?

Your city is bankrupt, and without government help, you are in a world of trouble. Now with governemt help, we are all in a world of trouble, as you are now standing in line, well behind California.

I am sorry man. I hate to **** on your dreams and hopes, but this country is going down the tubes. I realize you are a bright young man, just pleased as a peach to live in such a big, robust city, I get that, but it is coming to an end! People will no longer play the wall street game in ten years, this city depends on that. These greedy bastards will no longer rule the world, i suggest you learn chinese, and move to China.:(

Again, not really.

Yes, they most certainly will.
