I used to suffer from this problem so I sympathize with this man who killed his wife while dreaming. I suffered from what I used to call 'waking dreams' for many years. It would happen in an in between state where I would incorporate my sleeping environment and whoever was in it, and hallucinate, seeing things that weren't there. The worst thing I ever did was knock down a pram with our newborn son swaddled in it, who tumbled out, fortunately unhurt. I was having a dream that there was an evil entity in the pram. Really scary!

BBC NEWS | UK | Wales | Man killed wife 'during a dream'

The trial of a husband accused of murdering his wife as they slept in a camper van has heard he killed her while he dreamt she was an intruder.

The prosecution said that at 0349 the next morning, Mr Thomas made a 999 call, which was later played to the court, in which he said he had killed his wife because he had mistaken her for an intruder in a dream.

He said he had dreamt he was fighting one of the boy racers.

The prosecution said the defendant had told the 999 operator: "I woke up fighting one of those boys but it wasn't a boy, it was Christine."

In police interviews, Mr Thomas repeated what he had told the 999 operator - that he had dreamt of a man crawling across the bed, putting him in a headlock, then waking to find his wife dead.

A guy I used to date would have dreams like that, sort of. He damn near killed me one night. If I hadn't been strong enough to knock him off of me, thereby forcing him to release his grip on my throat, he would have killed me.

I've had this happen a few times as well...Though I never tried to murder or strangle anyone.

One morning I was dreaming that a nuclear bomb had exploded and at the exact time I was dreaming the bomb going off, lightning and very loud thunder woke me up.I was running around the house in a panic looking out the windows for about 5 minutes until I realized what had happened.

I did that once or twice too. It's really scary. What was more common were too recurrent hallucinations. One was where I would be thinking I was awake and my eyes would be open, and a large spider would be lower itself right over the bed. I would think to myself 'This time I'm going to get it!'. I would be sure it there, I would see it. I'd get a pillow, the spider would retreat somehow. Later I'd quickly turn on the light to try to catch the spider. It got bigger and bigger as time went on, often escaping through a window somehow. Once I was fully awake I'd realize I had been hallucinating again.

The second theme came after the spider dreams subsided. I finally realized, I think, that they were not real so the malady developed into, first listening devices being planted in the room by a perverted neighbor who wanted to eavesdrop, then moving on to elaborate devices that would pop out of the wall while I slept to spy, then they would retreat back into the wall just in time when I awoke. Those tormented me for a long time.

In my case, I don't think he was *trying* to kill me. I think he just wasn't able to realize how much strength he was putting into his grip on my throat. When I knocked him off of me, he landed in the floor next to the bed and woke up. He was just confused, mumbled something, climbed back in bed and went to sleep.

I was always afraid I'd go too far and actually hurt someone, but I always came to just in time. The scariest thing was knocking the baby buggy over. Fortunately the baby was tightly swaddled and rolled out in a nice compact bundle. He cried but was unhurt.

I'm glad this hasn't happened in over 10 years. It was awful. I called a radio Christian psychologist once and he thought that it stemmed from unresolved anger. I think I did have some bottled up emotions. I used to sometimes sleepwalk as a kid though. A couple of my kids also sleepwalk so I think there's a hereditary factor.

I dreamed I was floating once. I woke myself up landing hard on the bed.

The worst one I get is when I dream I'm paralyzed.the first time that happened I thought I died and went straight to hell.

It could be BS, but I've heard of this before.

In the early 1900s there was a detective who was asked to solve a murder case. But he ended up turning himself in to the police after he realized that he had murdered the man while sleepwalking and was investigating his own crime.

I doubt if this is BS. I've experienced this phenomena vividly. The article is very detailed about the story, the 999 call. The couple's daughters testified that he has a history of sleepwalking. The couple normally slept separately except when traveling in their motorhome.

I've experienced it second-hand (so to speak), so I'm not so quick to jump and say it's BS.

Might be legit... will need to be investigated carefully, but it would be hard to prove anything decisively one way or the other. Bet he does time.

I've never hurt anyone while I was dreaming, but I have hurt several people who startled me while I was asleep...and who should have known better.

Waking up in the recovery room after surgery was bad too... I forgot to tell them I had some PTSD and they should be careful as I regained consciousness.

Sounds like alien visitation to me.;) Are you one of those guys I've seen on "The UFO Files"?

I sink ze good doctare vould tell us he vaz simply dreaming vat he truely dezired. (pardon the horrible einstein impression.)

Hell, day dreaming seems to be a pretty useable excuse. I doubt he'll ever see a cell. Only a minimum security mental hospital.

-Guy goes to his friend "hey man, I've been having a lot of Freudian Slips lately. Just yesterday I asked the ticket booth employee; I'd like 1 picket to Tittsburg." His buddy answers "Wow man, I've been having the same problem, this morning at breakfast, instead of asking my wife to pass the butter, I said; YOU RUINED MY LIFE YOU STUPID B****!":surrender

GySgt tried to break my finger once when he was asleep. He thought I was choking him. Come to think of it, I'm not sure why the gun's on his side of the bed....
