By the end of 1932, more than 13 million American workers were unemployed. Anxious citizens withdrew their deposits from banks and hoarded cash and gold. By early the next year, more than 9,000 banks had failed.

    without tarp.

In one of the largest tax increases in American history, the Revenue Act of 1932 raised income tax on the highest incomes from 25% to 63%. The estate tax was doubled and corporate taxes were raised by almost 15%. Also, a "check tax" was included that placed a 2-cent tax (over 30 cents in today's dollars) on all bank checks. Economists William D. Lastrapes and George Selgin, conclude that the check tax was "an important contributing factor to that period's severe monetary contraction."

That's stupid. Hoarding is a crazy concept. People save money with the intent to spend it eventually. Nobody saves money for the sake of saving money.

The Senate wants to provide $4 billion to help homecare providers for 6,800 disabled veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. Leaders hoped the measure would sail through on the eve of Veterans Day by unanimous consent, but they got one no vote: Republican Tom Coburn. He says there is no budgeted money for the bill and that other programs should be cut to pay for it, and he isn't backing down.

saving money is anti-stimulative. spending money is stimulative.

VETERANS GROUP OUTRAGED OVER BUDGET CUTS

WASHINGTON, March 12-The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) has labeled as
"indefensible and callous;" a plan by the House Budget Committee to slash
$470 billion from domestic spending, including health care for sick and
disabled veterans. The draft budget resolution would leave the $1.6 trillion
Bush tax cut plan intact and allow huge spending increases on defense and
    homeland security.
