Don't think that because she's a sinlge parent that didn't have anyone to watch her kid, that this is just gonna be ok.

There's a huge misunderstanding in this thread about how the military deals with single parents.
My point was less about whether or not she should/will get court marshalled, as I really don't know military law that well, but more to the point that whether she is or not likely has little to do with her being a female and the above poster would've likely had the same results that she has if given the same situation

Yes I would be this hard on a single Dad if he failed to follow proper procedures in the same situation.

Her situation makes it embarassing and has other implications and points to *why* women were never wanted in the military - but my overall reaction and expectation is the same.

She is AWOL, that puts her in the wrong. Period. As I said earlier in the thread, her unit commander is responsible for this SNAFU, as well.

It's the military. You do not do "a little more time" for a deployment. You are expected to be ready since they are rarely surprises, and you are expected to keep your command notified of issues you may have with being able to deploy. The fault is not with the military here, it rests solely on the person who is not holding up their end of the bargain.

I understand your point, now. Thank you for clarifying.

embarrassing to whom? what other implications? this really has nothing to do with women, spiker. this involves a single parent without an adequate support system.

No, this involves a woman that didn't do her job and insure that her child had proper care while she was on a deployment. If it's proven that she intentionally didn't provide adequate child care for her kid, so as to interrupt her deployment, then it's not going to go good for her.

Mary Kies was just an individual woman - yet she single handedly changed the face of history for us.

Things are not equal, still. Things aren't always fair and often these types of situations just don't help the efforts that other women have made - they're a setback.

If you haven't experienced setbacks and negative attitudes from an employer or other such based on your femininity or maternity status then you're lucky.

I, however, had dealt with it alot in my life and my various career choices - the actions of one can strongly alter other people's perception and response.

If this wasn't true then we wouldn't need affirmative action and support for women in the workforce, as well as legislation that ensures fair-pay. We're far from "equal" to many people and this case is an example of why.
