D'oh! RCN to Nix Covered Abortions from Insurance Policy

I stumbled across this tidbit of info over at Politico.com and thought it more than interesting...it's got to be an embarressment to RNC Pres. Michael Steele.

The Republican National Committee will no longer offer employees an insurance plan that covers abortion after POLITICO reported Thursday that the anti-abortion RNC's policy has covered the procedure since 1991.

According to several Cigna employees, the insurer offers its customers the opportunity to opt out of abortion coverage and the RNC did not choose to opt out.
The pro-life party has had insurance coverage that authorized elective abortions since 1991 and RNC President Steele is just now learning about it!?! I find that hard to believe especially given the strong anti-abortion stance in the health care reform debate.

The good news for pro-life Conservatives is that the RNC will ensure to offer insurance to their members that does not cover abortions in the near future.

The bad news for the RNC/Conservatives is they end up with egg on their faces. I mean, how do as a pro-life organization/political party retain health insurance from the came insurer (Cigna) for nearly two decades and NOT know your insurance policy covers the one grass roots/human rights issue you stand up for the most? What an embarrassment this has to be for Michael Steele.

Being that not all Republicans are against abortion, and that somewhere between 46% and 87% (depending on the study you want to believe) of insurance companies have coverage for abortion, this isn't really surprising to me. I figure the RNC, just as many other businesses, pick their insurance coverage depending on price and availability. I certainly wouldn't expect the DNC to offer only insurance for their employees that contained the coverage of abortion. Business practice often overrides political ideology, as it should imo.

Does social conservativeness outweigh fiscal conservativeness? I mean it seems that way, at least to me. The last president to balance the budget (fiscal conservative) was President Clinton (who happened to be a social liberal)
It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.

You speak as though the two must be at odds. Not so.

Well, fiscal conservativeness seems to have disappeared a long time ago. Even Reagan was a spender!

They don't even know what's in their own insurance. Actually I bet the fiscal cons set that up. They got a good deal and went with it with the full knowledge it covered abortion. Because social conservatism wasn't a big deal to them. Getting good coverage at good prices was important.
LOL.... like the Democrats read, and understood that 2000+ page travesty they voted for?

Did you perhaps forget the smiley or [/sarcasam]?

Still waiting for you to make the point.

That is the point. Fiscal conservatism should be practiced and not preached. I mean, can i call myself a conservative because i believe in a balanced budget unless we are in a steep recession while simultaneously being socially liberal?

I'd rather support a loosing Conservative then a winning Liberal any day.
