I stumbled across this tidbit of info over at Politico.com and thought it more than interesting...it's got to be an embarressment to RNC Pres. Michael Steele.
The pro-life party has had insurance coverage that authorized elective abortions since 1991 and RNC President Steele is just now learning about it!?! I find that hard to believe especially given the strong anti-abortion stance in the health care reform debate. The Republican National Committee will no longer offer employees an insurance plan that covers abortion after POLITICO reported Thursday that the anti-abortion RNC's policy has covered the procedure since 1991.
According to several Cigna employees, the insurer offers its customers the opportunity to opt out of abortion coverage – and the RNC did not choose to opt out.
The good news for pro-life Conservatives is that the RNC will ensure to offer insurance to their members that does not cover abortions in the near future.
The bad news for the RNC/Conservatives is they end up with egg on their faces. I mean, how do as a pro-life organization/political party retain health insurance from the came insurer (Cigna) for nearly two decades and NOT know your insurance policy covers the one grass roots/human rights issue you stand up for the most? What an embarrassment this has to be for Michael Steele.
