Did Democrat candidate Bill Owens really win NY-23? There seems to be some doubt about it now. In Oswego County, Hoffman's stronghold, there was a serious undercounting of votes. Hoffman was told that he only lead by 500 votes, leading him to concede the race to Owens. Uncounted votes were found that increased Hoffman's lead to 1,748. Owens lead has shrunk to only 3,026 votes from 5,336. The unknown is that 10,200 absentee ballots were distributed, are not due in til next Monday, and have not been counted. Fort Drum in Watertown has a large number of absentee ballots from the military there, which typically votes conservative.

Pelosi immediately swore in Owens last Friday so that he could vote on the health care reform bill the next day. If the vote count changes, Owens will be removed from office and Hoffman sworn in.

Washington -- Conservative Doug Hoffman conceded the race in the 23rd Congressional District last week after receiving two pieces of grim news for his campaign: He was down 5,335 votes with 93 percent of the vote counted on election night, and he had barely won his stronghold in Oswego County.

As it turns out, neither was true.

Will Hoffman eventually be declared the winner? It is improbable, but stranger things have happened. Acorn is not strong in the North Country, so that is a good factor for Hoffman's chances.

3000 votes is a tough row to hoe, but it is overseas ballots.
If ever there was a chance of it happening this would rank in the higher odds category.

Like I said, I'm not holding my breath, but it sure would put a pin in the Dem's balloon.

Owens and the new Congressman from California were hastily sworn in so they could vote on Pelosi's health care bill, which passed by 2 votes.

But Hoffman’s concession -- based on snafus in Oswego County and elsewhere that left his vote undercounted -- set off a chain of events that echoed all the way to Washington, D.C., and helped secure passage of a historic health care reform bill.

Democratic Rep. Bill Owens was quickly sworn into office on Friday, a day before the rare weekend vote in the House of Representatives. His support sealed his party’s narrow victory on the health care legislation.

Now a recanvassing in the 11-county district shows that Owens’ lead has narrowed to 3,026 votes over Hoffman, 66,698 to 63,672, according to the latest unofficial results from the state Board of Elections.

In Oswego County, where Hoffman was reported to lead by only 500 votes with 93 percent of the vote counted election night, inspectors found Hoffman actually won by 1,748 votes -- 12,748 to 11,000.

The new vote totals mean the race will be decided by absentee ballots, of which about 10,200 were distributed, said John Conklin, communications director for the state Board of Elections.

Under a new law in New York that extended deadlines, military and overseas ballots received by this coming Monday (and postmarked by Nov. 2) will be counted. Standard absentee ballots had to be returned this past Monday.
Conklin said the state sent a letter to the House Clerk last week explaining that no winner had been determined in the 23rd District, and therefore the state had not certified the election. But the letter noted that Owens still led by about 3,000 votes, and that the special election was not contested -- two factors that legally allowed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to swear in Owens on Friday.
"We sent a letter to the clerk laying out the totals," Conklin said. "The key is that Hoffman conceded, which means the race is not contested. However, all ballots will be counted, and if the result changes, Owens will have to be removed."

Well, well, well...What do we have here? Me thinks a little too much gloating on the demo side, too early.

I noticed that the demo's took full advantage of hustling Owens off to DC to cast that much needed vote in taking over our health care system, but if it turns out that he did not win, does that mean that his vote counted?

And what of Hoffman's concession? would that also be overturned if found out to have actually won NY 23?

I don't think it will happen, largely to the fraud being investigated in the absentee system there, but one can hope....

Owen's votes will remain valid I believe.

Hoffman's concession is basically overruled I believe, with the vote totals having him replace Owens if it turns out that way.

We can't blame Nancy without putting some blame on Hoffman though. Nancy followed the rules and took her opportunity, as advantageous as it was. An opportunity that only presented itself because Hoffman chose to concede. The sad thing is this all came about due to partisan politics. If it wasn't a rush job to try and get an extra vote on a particular bill then Owens likely wouldn't have made any impact before everything was counted anyways

You never now. Franken had what seemed to be an insurmountable barrier, yet he ended up winning. I would not be surprised if Hoffman pulls this off.

I would. I was surprised when they called in on election night, b/c I knew there were 10k+ absentee ballots out, but I've seen counts since. Hoffman would have to win like, more than 2/3 of what is left, or something like that.

Yeah, I think you're right about this, especially with the funny business going on with absentee ballots before the election. Real shame though.

On a bright note, I did hear today that the 23rd district voting had an impact on NY legislature, they are balking at introducing controversial legislation like same sex marriage, because none of them wants to stick their necks out.

Regardless of how much evidence is uncovered of inconsistencies in the counting or obvious fraud that is yet to berevealed or has been found already, chances of the election being overturned are about the same as Obama talking for more then a minute and actually telling the truth. That my friends is about a 1 in 10,000 chance based solely on my observations of the last 11 months and doesn't take into consideration the campaign when a near miracle occurred and it was reported to me that he told the truth once. But that was such a fleeting occasion no one has yet been able to pinpoint it's time, location or subject matter. I think it maight have been when he promised to wreck America. Oh I'm sorry some say it was change America he said. No matter the result is the same. But I digress.

The election will stand because ACORN can do no wrong and NY State Elections are run By Dims (no spell error) and NY is second in corruption only to a certain portion of Illinois where the wind blows a lot.
