Fort Hood Gunman Gave Signals Before His Rampage

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/09/us/09reconstruct.html

The most in-depth and frankly horrifying coverage of the Fort Hood shootings.

As he methodically moved around the room, he spared some people while firing on others several times. He seemed to discriminate among his targets, though it is unclear why. All but one of the dead were soldiers.

“Our witnesses said he made eye contact with a guy and then moved to somebody in uniform,” said Representative K. Michael Conaway, Republican of Texas.

He fired more than 100 rounds.

The intermittent firing gave some soldiers false hope as they hunkered down in the processing center, flattening themselves under tables and propping chairs against flimsy cubicle doors.

Witnesses said that the floor became drenched with blood and that soldiers, apparently dead, were draped over chairs in the waiting area or lying on the floor.

Specialist Matthew Cooke, 30, who was expecting orders to leave for Afghanistan in January, was waiting in line to be processed in the medical building when Major Hasan opened fire. A soldier standing near him was hit and crumpled to the ground, and Specialist Cooke dropped to his knees and leaned over the soldier to shield him from being struck again, Specialist Cooke’s father, Carl, said in an interview.

Major Hasan walked up to Specialist Cooke, who had previously done a tour in Iraq, pointed his gun down at his back and shot him several times, Mr. Cooke said. “The rounds nicked his colon and several places in his intestines, bladder and spleen,” he said, but the specialist survived.

Cpl. Nathan Hewitt, 27, thought that he was in an unannounced training exercise when he heard the gunfire erupt. Then he saw the blood on his thigh and felt the sting from the bullet that hit him, said his father, Steven Hewitt.

The shooting stopped momentarily, and Corporal Hewitt started to crawl out of the room on his belly with others following. Major Hasan was only reloading. He started to shoot again, hitting Corporal Hewitt in the calf.

The first police officers to arrive found Major Hasan chasing a wounded soldier outside the building, investigators said. Pulling up in a squad car, Sgt. Kimberly D. Munley went after him and shot him in an exchange of gunfire that left her wounded.

    It was 1:27 p.m.

The questions this raises far out number any answers. My first reaction is how can anyone so stupid that they fall for such an irrational belief system and let in control their thought processes make it through college and become an officer in the Army, and then not be kick out on his butt for what he had said and what was known about his affiliations. And this just barely scratches the surface of the questions. As I have said before you can't get PTSD by osmosis and that BS is just that. He like so many in his choice of medical specialty are in serious need of help from someone in that profession.
I believe he would have done this had he never been in the Army or if he had learned his religion of hate in prison. He is without question mentally deficient as is anyone who thinks killing innocent people and being killed in the process well grant you some special reward from Allah in the after life.

You do know there are 1.4 billion Muslims who aren't terrorists right and don't kill people because of their beliefs? Just wondering. Because your post seems like it could be applied to any set of beliefs one deems 'irrational'.
I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. - MLK

If you had read what I wrote and not what you think or wish I wrote, you would note that I did not say all Muslims and I used the word anyone in talking about Hasan ans include in to that all Terrorists. Ant yes it could apply to any irrational belief that leads to irrational acts of death and destruction based on those beliefs. I include in that group of irrational zealots those who murder abortion Doctors even though I vehemently appose abortion.
One major mistake about the belief in Islam is that it's a religion of peace. Those who wish to follow it's teachings to the letter have a conflicts with thier beliefs living in western society, and some are able to deal with it, others are not. Hasan being made out to be a devout Muslin is dispelled by his frequent trips to the Strip Clubs, don't you think.

Soldiers aren't innocent people, especially not in the context you're using the word. Mr. Hasan's main offense here was not murder, it was treason. This was military action against his own people and worse, people whom he had served with.

I believe this was the case with several of the conspirators behind the September 11th attacks as well. One might wonder if the guilt of succumbing to temptation might be a motivator in seeking martyrdom; your life's blood is a steep price to pay, but many would say that washing away your sins is worth that price.

    You can cut the condescension.
"He who does not think himself worth saving from poverty and ignorance by his own efforts, will hardly be thought worth the efforts of anybody else." -- Frederick Douglass, Self-Made Men (1872)
"Fly-over" country voted, and The Donald is now POTUS.
