The Ft. Hood Hero: Who is Kimberly Munley? - Yahoo! News

Sgt. Kimberly Munley, 34, a civilian Department of Defense police officer at the base, is credited with stopping the firing rampage of U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan at the Soldier Readiness Center within a few minutes after he launched his attack.

Munley, described by neighbor Brooke Beato, as "very petite, with long blonde hair and a strong personality," was credited by base officials with preventing further carnage by aggressively engaging Hasan as he shot at her. She rounded a corner, took aim at Hasan and brought him down, officials said. "It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer," base commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said. It also was a tactic straight out of recent lessons learned from the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting, when first responders waited for additional backup before engaging the shooter.

"She walked up and engaged him," said Lt. Gen. Cone told Associated Press. As a member of the base Special Reaction Team, Munley had learned that "if you act aggressively to take out a shooter, you will have less fatalities," Cone said.

Irony is...a fundamentalist Islamic shooter taken out by a petite blond female cop. I personally found it interesting that on a military base, this man was able to shoot 40+ people before being tackled and/or taken out.

Most military personal are not armed at the base, weapons are locked up and a lot of times those on guard keep their weapons unloaded. Hopefully this practice changes.

It makes me proud to see that there are cops in this country who won't hesitate to drop the hammer on a bad guy.

Very impressive kill.

Actually, good shooting would have been 2 to the chest, 1 to the head.

But, good enough, still, in my book.

What I mean by that is that when officers shoot, they are trained to shoot to kill, not wound.

They are trained to fire two shots to the chest and one to the head. In this kind of circumstance, training should take over, and this should be instinctive.

The actual vital area where penetration is likely into the brain is about 4 inches wide by 2.5 inches tall.
So, you shoot for the torso with the double tap hoping to hit the heart, lungs, or spine, and if that fails, or they are dying but still fighting, engage with a round to the head for an instant incapacitation. She shot her first round into the torso, but it didn't hit the chest. Of course, she was shot 3 times, so that's understandable.

Easier said than done, especially in a close quarters firefight.

I agree though. Events can happen so quickly that reaction must be instinctive. There is usually no time whatsoever to think about it. It is all decided within a few heartbeats.

Yeah, that was just my sick sense of humor kicking in...:doh

I think it's far better to have the dude alive and kicking.

He can't answer questions if he's dead, and he has some questions to answer.

I agree whole heartedly. Instead of 72 virgins, he'll have to deal with 72 bubbas during his wait for the firing squad.
