Cao jolts the House - Yahoo! News

In December 2008, the nationally unknown Vietnamese community activist captured a seat for Republicans in majority-black New Orleans, becoming an instant — albeit short-lived — celebrity for the GOP.

On Saturday night, he handed Democrats their only Republican vote on the centerpiece of their domestic agenda, a massive overhaul of the nation's health care system that promises to enhance coverage for tens of millions of Americans and thousands of Cao's constituents. Now he's a bit of a cult hero on the left — a profile in courage, Democrats say — and television bookers were scrambling to find cell phone numbers for his aides Sunday.

Republicans and Democrats who have worked closely with Cao in Louisiana and Washington say they weren’t a bit surprised — even if much of the political world did a double take — when Cao registered a green light on the scoreboard in the House chamber.

“I think he works hard. I think he studies things, and I think he tries to do the right thing,” said an administration official who has worked with Cao. “People in the administration reach out to him a lot because he’s willing to talk about things nondogmatically.”

I wish that Obama were approaching things more like this guy, with a bi-partisan staff, for instance.

So I guess now its the "Party of No minus one"

In other words, the Republican party backed a candidate who was not a Conservative in order to win a seat, with the result being the same as if the Democrat had won. I am not surprised.

Well, they seem about equal in political incoherence. Anyone who voted for that 2000 page monstrosity has no real grasp of nor interest in legality and good governance. For one thing, I would wager good money that no one who voted for it could describe in even crude detail what's in it.

Cao's district is mostly black. He knows what side his bread is buttered on.

His district is mostly POOR, and he's doing his job...representing what his constituents want.

Too bad the "Party of no minus one" doesn't follow his example and vote the interests and wishes of their constituents.

God forbid that congress people represent what the people want.

And black!...lol. It's a gerrymandered district created by the Voting Rights Act.

Yeah, most Americans are opposed to tis bill.

I hate that ****, personally. They keep trying to do it to us in the panhandle, as well, only to benefit the Republicans.

Actually, according to Edmund Burke, that is not the duty of a Representative.

Burke tells us that a Representative owes his constituents, in addition to his industry, his judgment and that he betrays them if he surrenders that to their opinion.

They just did didn't they? Would you vote for a bill, 2000 pages long, involving a vast expansion of Government powers when you couldn't conceivably be intimately familiar with what it contains?

God forbid that congress people represent what the people want.

The people want free money, free liquor, free housing, a new car and a good pizza that wont make them fat. Is it Congress' duty to provide those too?

Somebody has to think like an adult here.

That's why we elect congress people to represent us.
I have faith that my congressman knew what was in the bill when he voted.

The second part of this is just silly and doesn't warrant a legitimate response.

The same goes for the "Party of yes minus thirty nine" ;)

The Democrats actually voted in accord with what the people of this country want. Haven't you been following along....or do you get your news from Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh et al.

Since when did clarity and brevity stop any congressional bill from passing?

Health Care Reform
Although House Passes Health Care, Most Voters Still Oppose the Legislation

Monday, November 09, 2009

Over the weekend, Democratic leaders spoke of an historic moment as health care reform legislation passed the House of Representatives. But that legislative victory failed to significantly move public opinion.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 45% now favor the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. Most (52%) remain opposed.

Only 25% Strongly Support the plan while 42% are Strongly Opposed.

The Huffington Post is as left-leaning as Rasmussen is right-leaning. They both are generally accepted as decent pollsters.
