SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. — Democrats won a special election in New York State’s northernmost Congressional district Tuesday, a setback for national conservatives who heavily promoted a third candidate in what became an intense debate over the direction of the Republican Party.
The Democratic candidate, Bill Owens, led with 49 percent of the vote, while the Conservative Party candidate, Douglas L. Hoffman, had 46 percent. The district has been a Republican stronghold for generations, and the party has represented parts of it since the 19th century.

The battle became one of the most closely followed races in the nation, drawing in some of the biggest forces in politics in both parties. Republicans who viewed the race as a test of the party’s most deeply held conservative principles — including Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska; Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, a presidential hopeful; and grass-roots groups that have forcefully opposed Democratic economic and health care policies — rallied behind Mr. Hoffman.

Well what do you know, even a district that is historically Republican couldn't stomach the new conservative agenda.

Yep, that's exactly what happened, you got it.

How about NJ so sick of the left they turned right?

Any comment there or are you going to spend the weeks ahead talking about the NY 23 race?

Yes this is the first election we've seen in a long time where a group of voters of one side was so sick of the other the country's leadership swung from Right to left OR VISA VERSA.

Do the rabid righties ever get tired of trying to have it both ways in every topic on this forum?

It is quite laughtable not only to me...but the whole world.

This one is a shocker. I had not expected that the Dem would win at all. Sure the 2 major races could easily go to the GOP, but this one was almost 100% sure for the GOP.. guess not.

Well, one is a Congressional race and one is local race. Why would we talk about the governor race when the New York Congressional race is the subject matter of the thread? Can you elighten me?

(Hint. Don't bother. We both know you're pissed about the Congressional race.)

As of 430AM Wend. morning it was still to close to be called.

Link? The New York Times seems to think it's over, and the numbers look pretty decisive to me. How is a lead of over four percent "too close to call"?

Winner: Bill Owens
Bill Owens Dem. 63,496 49.3%
Doug Hoffman Con. 58,161 45.2

Perhaps the Republans will be able to drag this through the courts and stall it for months.

It's over, no one is saying "too close to call". The Fox News website doesn't mention the story at all, that seems to be their reaction to news that doesn't spin their way.

Fox was the first to call it for Owens last night, from what I saw. CNN hadn't called it yet, and MSNBC was still calling it too close even a few hours later.

Huge defeat for the GOPs new "shun the moderates" strategy. Couldn't even work in a largely conservative district. Hopefully they won't learn their lesson.
Go Palin 2012!

Oh Goody, we are playing the headline game. Well, NY23 was a shocker to say the least. I thought of the races that one was pretty locked up. But a huge defeat for Obama agenda none the less. here is how the AP saw it.

WASHINGTON – Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.

Look, the elections last night proved that this country over all these years have not changed their election picking strategy. Independents are what tilted these major races to the GOP, and not the Indy's we have in here which heavily are liberals that are too ashamed to admit it. But true Independents.

I really don't see how the defeat of a crooked governor in New Jersey has anything to do with the "Obama agenda".

Just wait until all those dems jump the healthcare ship, then perhaps you will understand the magnitude of this win.

There is nothing STUNNING about a Republican Democrat narrowly defeating the crooked Democratic governor of New Jersey late entering Conservative 3rd party candidate. It has nothing to do with Obama's the conservative agenda, and more to do with Sopranos politics the GOP candidate that was forced out due to the popularity of Hoffman deciding to endorse the DEMOCRAT rather than the conservative.

I figure the best way to respond to your ludicrous assertions is with well, your ludicrous assertions.

Why don't you stay on topic. This is a huge defeat in a largely conservative area for the Beck/Limbaugh's new GOP strategy.

Really? It has been pointed out here and elsewhere that Obama was spending alot of time in NJ. Obviously he saw it as important. The one thing I will give you, is the observance of the electorate turning on corruption, and lies. The people are tired of being lied to by their elected representatives. Starting with the Chief liar, Obama himself.

Now Will, you can try and spin it anyway you wish. Hell, If I were in your shoes I sure as heck would. But, at the end of the day, and you stare into the mirror, you know damned well that this threw a monkey wrench into the works for Obama.

Why are you yelling at will?

It's funny watching the far left wingers here cling to this split vote defeat.

I'm not clinging to anything or yelling at will. I'm just laughing at your avoidance of the rejection of the "Conservative" new GOP strategy.

That sign must be on the Turnpike leaving NJ into Delaware.....
