Al Gore could become world's first carbon billionaire

Al Gore, the former US vice president, could become the world's first carbon billionaire after investing heavily in green energy companies.
Last year Mr Gore's venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m to develop energy-saving technology.
The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make the electricity grid more efficient.
Successful Camco auction a boost for carbon tradingThe deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, the New York Times reports. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts.
The move means that venture capital company Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.
Nope, no agenda on Gore's part. Totally honest Nobel Prize winner.

Not to defend Gore's hysteria, but he probably invested in those companies because he believes in their cause. He surely could have invested in other industries if he wanted.

Every religion has their hypocrites who exploit their followers/congregation for wealth. I do not see why the man made global warming fairy tale religion would be any different than any other religion.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

First of all oil companies only sell their products but the price of oil they have close to nothing to do with.

As to Gore he's just the leading example of the huge business that Environmentalism has become. The people down at street level or the rank and file may very well be sincere about their desire to improve thing environmentally but those who run everyone of these high profile groups are in it for the money.
just look at the totally inconceivable protests coming over the building of wind generation fields off shore because they are ugly or the ones opposing much needed solar generation projects in Southern California and NV. They don't want to risk some obscure wildlife that in fact will not be impacted 1 iota. They can't have solutions because it would end the need for people to donate to the cause. look at the March of Dimes. Polio was nearly illuminated so they changed the mission to maintain the flow of donations and support because non profit means the organization can't get rich but those who run it sure as hell do. Look at the Red Cross where the CEO or director makes last I heard makes over a quarter million dollars a year and rides around in chauffeur driven limo.

The Green/Enviro industry is alive and well. It will join these other industries doing business "for profit":

    National Defense
    Prison/Corrections
    Health Care

...and others I can't think of off the top of my head.

Are you trying to say that a politician would selfishly promote a cause he is invested in with some attempt to reap profit from government programs which can spawn through support of said cause? Never!

Why? Do you really expect non-profits or government entities to innovate at the same rate as for-profit businesses?

Is this not called "speculation" - something a lot of entrepreneurs do? He could just as easily lost that $75 million with the company going belly-up or not coming through with the research or hitting all sorts of problems.

Greenhouse gases: Any gas that, by an accident of chemistry, happens to absorb radiation of a type that the Earth, by an accident of history, would like to lose.
The internet is like a herd of performing elephants with diarrhoea -- massive, difficult to redirect, awe-inspiring, entertaining, and a source of mind- boggling amounts of excrement when you least expect it.
