Al Gore could become world's first carbon billionaire

The only thing I dislike about Gore is his hypocritical personal energy gluttony. I voted for him against Bush and think we'd be all be better off is he had won.

Whether global warming is caused by human activities or not, we need to start changing the way we do things, if merely because we will be running out of fossil fuels in the next century. If we don't plan for that civilization as we know it will utterly collapse.

This all proves that it's a good idea and profitable to invest in infant energy industries. They are our future.

But the Democrats won't let us build nuclear power facilities, drill our own oil, support clean coal initiatives, nada.

Hey you Democrats and Republicans:

Are you willing to compromise your hidebound ideologies in order to get something done for the common good? Even at the cost of abandoning your ideological soulmates in order to make common cause with those people you generally consider political opponents?

Our energy problems can be broken down into short term, mid term and long term. Are you on the left prepared to permit drilling and development of nuclear power plants as short and mid term solutions in order to get everyone on board for your long term goal of replacing fossil fuels and nuclear energy with renewables and conservation? Are you folks on the right prepared to accept the left's long term goals despite your capitalist ideology?

Based on the previous actions on the left and the right, the answer to each of my questions is no. The reason both left and right answer no is because each sees the advancement of partisan special interests as more important than the common good. Shame on you.

Democrats aren't stopping you from building new nuclear power plants - economics is - it is !#@!# expensive to build and operate a nuclear power plant.

And we are supposed to be trying to wean ourselves away from oil not drilling for more'

Finally clean coal is good (in limited amounts) and if you can prove it is the "democrats" and not the economics of clean coal that is proving to be the barrier I might listen

Isn't that what living in a home that uses twenty times more energy than a standard home, flying private jets, carbon credits and traveling to concerts by plane and dumping trash everywhere does? The appearance of doing something where you are not

He is doing something. He is making $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. I dont fault him for that but he is raping us all in the process.

In the old days they used to hang snakeoil salesmen.

Well, you are not an investment banker - why do you think nobody invests in growing trees? Too long to wait for a return on your money.

I have known about the rising CO2 levels and concern about AGW since the early eighties at least. I have watched the frustration of the pro-alternate energy group trying desperately to get any sort of research funding while coal fired power stations were receiving government subsidies.

Were you around for the Global Cooling in the 70's? Same bunch, different spew.

If trees are such a good investment - why are there not more being grown? We are deforesting our planet at an alarming rate and there is little incentive to stop it. I am betting that you, like us actually have legislation that forces loggers to replant - that logging companies get subsidies. I will also bet that the trees most often regrown are fast growing pines. Some of the best wearing longest lasting trees in the world are the Australian hardwoods - ruddy hard to find anyone investing in growing Ironbark or Ironwood trees.

Tell me - you have a choice of putting money into one investment that will return 10% profit over 5 years or put it into another investment that might or might not give you 20% profit but you have to wait 20 years to collect - which one will you choose?

And you are making the argument for me - you are saying that these alternate energy sources are nowhere near maturity and yet the only way they will mature is by investment of capital - which Gore is going - and taking the requisite risks

The forest resources of the U.S. have continued improving in general condition and quality, as measured by increased average size and volume of trees. This trend has been evident since the 1960s and before. The total forestland acreage has remained stable since 1900.

A United States Forest Acreage Trendline

Not in the US. environmentalists are so uninformed.
