Modern Warfare 2 Opens with Terror

Of course those are realistic possibilities! You're not one of those types who runs around unprepared for undead attack are you? Zombies represent one of the, if not the, greatest dangers to modern day society; we can't take them lightly. And Nazi zombies.....even worse! You must always be on the look out for zombies and Nazis and especially Nazi zombies and to a lesser extent zombie Nazis (though Nazi zombies are by far the worst of all).

Speaking of Nazi Zombies.

I see no reason to be upset with this. If you cannot or will not accept the fact that terrorists murder the innocent, you should refrain from playing the game.

I look forward to the game, but why did they make the terror scene interactive? Why involve the player in it?

Because it's fun.

Terrorism is probably the most inhuman act that the current century has seen, and while I agree that it should be presented that way - if only to show the people how inhuman the perpetrators of those attacks are - to make the scene interactive, and involve the player in it... is just wrong.

So yeah, you could say that in GTA and other games the player also takes part in the killing of innocents, but it is certainly not presented in the same way that it is presented in modern warfare 2 - in a very realistic way that has happened too many times around the world in the last 50 years.

It's just a video game dude. Ever play Counter-Strike? You get to be "terrorists" in that game, too. My favorite weapon is the AK-47! It kills those Counter-Terrorists real good!

Command and Conquer Generals - 2003
That game didn't look extremely realistic, but you could play as terrorists and kill civilians and American soldiers with car bombs and chemical weapons.

I too will be buying this game. From what I have researched on this video, it is completely optional, with a forewarning to what the scene contains. I believe Infinity Ward, put the scene into the game to try and make it as real as they could. I read that shooting the civilians will not be an easy task even for most gamers. Think of it this way, us gamers are always told how violent games desensitize us, but I will still have a hard time shooting civilians as a terrorist (even in a video game) but it shouldn't be removed. If anything, it will make the person playing the special forces side want to get these terrorists and bring them to justice even more. That's my outlook on it at least. Putting the player in the shoe's of the shooter, makes them realize what a terrible event it was (in the game), and more than likely will push them even harder to beat the game and bring the evil doer's to justice.

Anyway I also read that, the character is undercover , and basically has to go along with it in order to bridge the trust with these terrorists, otherwise face blowing the whole operation etc.

Well thanks for spoiling the game's plot there. :2razz:

Anyway, I guess that it's like in Double Agent where Fisher can decide to blow up the tourists yacht and stuff to gain the terrorists' support so the NSA's operation would be successful.

You've convinced me I guess.

God why do video games always have such horrible dialogue?

Ya, but wielding a wolverine in a harness has to be one of the most bitchin weapons ever.

Counter Strike came out in 2003....and you could kill hostages.

People who get pissed off at MW2 are late to the game.
Counter strike is as emotional as Pacman. (Not Mrs. Pacman)

Dead Snow, bro...Dead Snow!

lol. But you couldn't cheat at Pacman like people did with Counter Strike.

Still, a game where you can walk up to hostages and blow them away with various weapons in correction, 1999 kind of suggests that people getting hissy about this are way late to the game.

Yes, just like you can friendly fire soldiers in nearly every fps multiplayer game.

The point is that in MW2 they took it to an entire different level with the actual game scene being all about killing those civilians in a terror strike that has never looked more similar to reality.

I'll still play the game though, and probably not skip that scene, but I feel that it'd be mentally hard to go through it like that.

The concept is not new. The issue is definitely about degrees. We can assassinate a lot of people in these games, but just like that one game whose name I can no longer remember, we could relive the assassination of JFK and it really hit a nerve. Now, a friend of mine had a lot more fun seeing what would happen if you got rid of the drivers instead, but the feelings intensified once we knew who we were shooting at and how it was portrayed.

This is really a risky move on their part, and it was risky showing the White House under attack in advertisements. We just aren't quite used to the same things being shown in games as we are seeing it in film. It comes off differently.

Personally I don't see this as any worse than in World at War. In one of the last levels, you had the option to kill German POWs. The scene wasn't as sustained as the violence in this level, but war crimes aren't new to the COD series. The game isn't advocating terrorism, video games are full of you playing the bad guy.

What you guys are missing is that the scene is supposed to be emotionally hard. It's supposed to set you up for the rest of the game, to give you a taste of why your character is doing what he is doing.

Also, I'm not getting the game because of the whole Dedicated Server issue, but that is a different debate for a different forum.

Actually, I find myself having a high appreciation for game developers who make games like that. It's not too common in FPS games, but in action/adventure RPGs is much more prevalent. It definitely separates kids games from adult games. As a casual gamer, I like this very much.

Maybe someone will come up with an interactive "Holocaust" game. It could start out, actually bulding your own death camp, then round up the Jews, kill them. Hell, there could be a , "Nuremberg", version to go along with it, where all the Nazis can be found innocent and go free. Hell, Hitler could even survive the war in that game. it could coincide with an interactive 9/11 game, where you get to pilot one of the aircraft into your building of choice: Sear Tower, Prudential Building, any given state capital, etc.

Is everyone else as psyched as I am about crap like this?
