So if someone slams back a twelve pack in the parking lot and drives home, it's okay so long as he doesn't hit anything, then, right?

I'm sure these pilots are going to need a lawyer, why not apply, you sound so.......convincing.
It was the Austrasians, that hewed on bravely through the thick of the fight, it was they who found and cut down the Saracen King.

In the end, flying is way safer than driving. If you get pissed off about that, I'd hate to see you in the car. The airline, that was a couple dudes in one plane not paying attention. These planes basically fly themselves; the pilots are just there for the takeoff and the landing, for the most part.

All they're guilty of is wasting two hours of their passengers' time, and throwing off their flight schedule as well.

Which they of course should be fired for.
Even with auto pilot, collision avoidance avionics, air speed and altitude variance alarms it is their duty to the passengers and crew to have 100% attention when that aircraft is moving. Yes I said moving !! Not just flying.

NO NO NO NO and F NO they are not "just there for the takeoff and the landing, for the most part. "

Will you apply the same "logic " oxy m as it appaers to cruise ships, trains, and ferr boats ?

FAA revokes licenses of wayward Northwest pilots | General News | Comcast.net

FAA revokes licenses of wayward Northwest pilots. "The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday revoked the licenses of the two Northwest Airlines pilots who flew past their Minneapolis destination by 150 miles."

"elta said in a statement that using laptops or engaging in activity unrelated to the pilots' command of the aircraft during flight is strictly against the airline's flight deck policies. The airline said violations of that policy will result in termination."

No. It's like arguing that you shouldn't punish someone who drives distracted. And we don't; people are on their cell phones, messing around with the stereo, etc... while they drive all the time. They're not punished until they get in an accident.

It is dishonest to compare this to drunk driving because when you are drunk your judgment is impaired; when you are distracted your attention is impaired.

I highly doubt that would happen, but if it did then you couldn't really punish them because they'd be dead.

What if Balloon Boy got sucked into an engine?
That would make us all a lot happier.

What if they weren't at the controls when some mechanical/electronic casualty happened and the plane took a dive?
What if? What if? What if...

    Good one!

I've never been 150 miles lost, though - it's not like they fly by sight.

I was reading pilots' comments on an airline forum, and learned a few things. The pilots should have begun their descent 100 miles from the airport, so they flew 250 miles without controlling the plane. Turning back cost more miles, for a total of about 300 extra. One pilot said they landed with 20 minutes fuel left. If that is true, it becomes much more serious than "missing an exit".

Yeah, it could have ended rather tragicly, to be honest - especially when you consider that a stewardess told them they were off course, the pilots didn't suddenly realize it.
