DETROIT – Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83.

Sales died Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said.

At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said.

"If President Eisenhower would have walked down the street, no one would have recognized him as much as Soupy," Usher said.

"Sales was born Milton Supman on Jan. 8, 1926, in Franklinton, N.C., where his was the only Jewish family in town. His parents, owners of a dry-goods store, sold sheets to the Ku Klux Klan. The family later moved to Huntington, W.Va."

Soupy was at the end of his television career when I was a kid, but he did have a heck of a funny show. It appealed to everyone and it was clean, good family fun. Don't see that any more.

RIP Soupy --- your kind will not again, this way come.
 
I remember seeing him on one of the game shows telling his terrible jokes. :lol:
 
I watched Soupy every day after grade school in the 50's.

He had a "pet" named White Fang that was never seen on camera except for it's "arm or front leg" appearing in the doorway. That "door way" held some pretty unique characters during the show's run including movie stars, comedians, local (Los Angeles) and national news makers. I remember an instance where someone held up a "one finger salute" in that "door way" which caused a major ruckus for the station and the network.

RIP Soupy, You were always there for me as a kid.
 
It's always sad when an icon dies even one like Soupy who some loved and others didn't really care much for. I was never a big fan of slap sick like his or the Three Stooges, but he had his moments and it was great to see big shots get a pie in the face.
I would remind people that not being a fan does not mean didn't respect or admire for there fan base and fame.

I don't recall his show too well, but I do remember him on Hollywood squares, Pretty funny guy....Man I feel old.

They just showed a black and white clip on TV of Soupy with part of the "Rat Pack". Soupy nails Frank Sinatra with a cream pie while Sammy Davis jr., Dean Martin and Peter Lawford watched. Eventually everyone on the stage had a pie in the face. Hysterical, historical and memorable.

Soupy Sales was one of the best slapstick comedians to come out of Detroit. Detroit also gave the world the 3 Stooges. :)

You mean the naked girl? Obviously, that couldn't have been Soupy. He had one too many moving parts to be able to pull that one off. LOL.

President Obama was joined in the Rose Garden by John McCain, Sarah Palin, Hilary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. All of them mourned the loss of the man who everyone loved, and all of them expressed a sense of regret that they had never had Soupy hit them in the face with a pie to teach them humility.

The nation has heartily agreed with both sentiments.

Topless dancer pranks
The show's set included a door in the background. During the show, Sales would answer a knock at the door and interact with an actor seen only as an arm. Occasionally, the person at the door was a celebrity, such as Burt Lancaster, Fess Parker or Alice Cooper. Once, while the show was being broadcast live from Detroit, Sales' studio crew pulled a prank on him: when he opened the door, he saw a topless dancer partially covered with a balloon. Some reports say the gag was furthered by the crew switching the studio monitors so that Soupy would think the stripper image was going out over the air. During his years in Los Angeles, as Sales was ending the show, he also opened the door and saw a topless dancer gyrating with a balloon
