Farmers Arrested Planting Hemp On DEA Headquarters Lawn (VIDEO)

A group of civilly-disobedient hemp farmers and business leaders were arrested Tuesday morning while digging up the lawn to plant industrial hemp seeds at the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

David Bronner, the president of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, a more than 60-year-old company that does tens of millions of dollars of business annually, was among those arrested.

Bronner buys the hemp used in his soaps from Canadian farmers. He was arrested outside the DEA museum, which shares space with the headquarters.

Hmm last I knew Hemp was legal so don't think they were arrested for that specifically. I would imagine they were arrested for digging up property that wasn't theirs.

Watching white haired burned out hippies is always entertaining. While the point is made, it was a stupid point. They should follow the "Johnny Appleseed" method and give away the seeds and plant them all over the country. I think High Times was giving away hemp seeds to do just that a few years ago, but, I don't think it ever caught on. Presumably the burn outs were too.. well.. burned out to remember they had to go plant.

But as identified - hemp itself is not illegal, which makes the point even weaker. They need some new ideas and a better PR person.

I think the point these people are making is that they want to actually grow it themselves in America.

This is incorrect, any and all species of the plant genus Cannabis are illegal under federal law.

Some hemp products are legal, but the plant itself and cultivation of it is still very illegal.

The U.S. makes no distinction regardless of species. Cannabis is cannabis in the eyes of the fed.

A handful of states have passed legislation making hemp cultivation legal, but it is still illegal under Federal law, and has been since the 1930's (with a brief respite for legal production during WWII)

here is a quote from the DEA when they tried to clarify their stance on hemp (complete with gross inaccuracies):

“Hemp” and marijuana are actually separate parts of the species of plant known as cannabis. Under federal law, Congress defined marijuana to focus on those parts of the cannabis plant that are the source of tetrahydrocannabinols (THC)

<snip>

“hemp” is not a term that is found in federal law.

DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson stated that “many Americans do not know that hemp and marijuana are both parts of the same plant and that hemp cannot be produced without producing marijuana.”

News from DEA, News Releases, 10/09/01

The fact that cannabis is the genus name of the plant and there are many species of which fibrous very low THC content hemp species is but a few is not even dealt with, since the prohibition is based on a blanket prohibition of all plant species under the genus cannabis, since they all are capable of producing "marijuana".. even if some do so with such a low amount of THC as to render consumption with the goal of intoxication futile.

I thought this story was hilarious. The guy looks like such a cheerful civil disobedient. (??)

I want to queue up some Bob Dylan. LOL

Digging up the DEA lawn to plant weed. I'm sure that plan sounded a lot better when it was hashed out around the bong circle.

I use Dr. Bronner's soap... it's the best soap I've ever found...

About the OP... I don't blame them. Hemp is such a lucrative business opportunity. It should be legal already. In Canada it can be grown but not without a lot of restrictions and high taxes. The barons of industry like to keep it that way.

I think it's funny Back in about 1981 or so someone planted hundreds of pot seeds in between the little 18" hedge plants all the way around the Federal Court House in Stockton California, and they never found out who did it. At the time there were bums noe called homeless people who would walk the court house halls waiting for court to be called back into session and they wold then check the ash trays for butts to smoke. you could still smoke inside of buildings them, even hospitals.
