U.S. troop funds diverted to pet projects

By Shaun Waterman THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Senators diverted $2.6 billion in funds in a defense spending bill to pet projects largely at the expense of accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition and training for U.S. troops, including those fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an analysis.

Among the 778 such projects, known as earmarks, packed into the bill: $25 million for a new World War II museum at the University of New Orleans and $20 million to launch an educational institute named after the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat.

While earmarks are hardly new in Washington, "in 30 years on Capitol Hill, I never saw Congress mangle the defense budget as badly as this year," said Winslow Wheeler, a former Senate staffer who worked on defense funding and oversight for both Republicans and Democrats. He is now a senior fellow at the Center for Defense Information, an independent research organization.

What say you of this? Sound low down to me. In any case. I'd like to get your responses to such a story. Is there another side we are missing, or did the senate really divert funds from the war effort for pet projects, and if the latter, what say you on that?

Crappy. I like funding the military. I don't necessarily like using the military though. I like having the best, strongest military in the world, and if we are at war then all must be done to ensure our side has the greatest advantage.

A good pet project for the military would be mechs....with energy swords. Cause that would be cool, and I'd want to pilot one. Though apparently mechs work best with 14-17 year old kids.

There are places you can divert funds from, the military should not be one of them.

To Bob Gates' great credit, he's actually the first SecDef in a long time who has confronted crap like this and actually gotten some results. With that said...it's unfortunate, but I don't think it's going to be eliminated entirely anytime soon.

And while I agree that pork-barrel spending is a waste of money, I don't think it's accurate to say that they diverted funds from the troops, as that would implies that they're taking money away from them. It's more likely that they just spent MORE overall than they otherwise would have.
    Are you coming to bed?
    I can't. This is important.
