Oregon Apartment Complex Bans Flying the American Flag

Their reasoning is that "someone might get offended"

Portland Oregon is certainly a left-winged city, but this is beyond absurd.

An Oregon apartment complex is banning its residents from flying American flags, not only from their dwellings but also their vehicles, KATU in Portland reported.

Residents' outrage started when Jim Clausen, whose son is in the military and on his way back to Iraq, was told he couldn't fly an American flag from the back of his motorcycle.

If he didn't take the flag down, he was told he'd face eviction, the station reported.

"It floored me," Clausen told the station. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying. It [the flag] stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly the flag."

Sharron White, a long-time resident, was told by management to take down the flag she's flown on her car for eight years because "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her, 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White told the station.

The ban also applies to flag stickers on cars, as well as sports flags.

That's a stupid, pointless, and disrespectful stance by the management.

Though, as a private residence the managers can enforce any restrictions they want as long as it doesn't inflict on constitutional rights. I personally, as I hope other do as well, would choose not to live there. Hopefully the apartment complex will be out of business soon if they don't reverse their absurd policy.

The ACLU would not help the woman, but the apartment manager changed her mind after consulting with an attorney.

I don't think the ability to fly a flag on someone else's private property is a violation of a civil liberty.

Glad the manager came to her senses.

Perhaps not, but according to the manager her legal counsel told her that their apartment and car are considered private property.

Yeah, she did the right thing by reversing engines on that one. This would have went to court, and she wouldn't have won. Who the hell would be offended by the American flag?
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

Yeah, that's all sorts of stupid. i wonder if there was something else going on here.
The Makeout Hobo is real, and does indeed travel around the country in his van and make out with ladies... If you meet the Makeout Hobo, it is customary to greet him with a shot of whiskey and a high five (if you are a dude) or passionate makeouts (if you are a lady).

That's why I refuse to live in a "Home Owner's association"....

Like Apartment buildings, you can be told what color you can paint your house...what trees you are allowed to plant, whether you can fly a flag....etc.
You can't even park in your own damned driveway in many of these HOA's.

I lived in an apartment complex in Tucson, AZ that had something like this right in the lease actually. The irony of it is that at the entrance to the complex there was an American flag waving.
