US cutoff of funding to Iran human rights cause signals shift - The Boston Globe

WASHINGTON - For the past five years, researchers in a modest office overlooking the New Haven green have carefully documented cases of assassination and torture of democracy activists in Iran. With more than $3 million in grants from the US State Department, they have pored over thousands of documents and Persian-language press reports and interviewed scores of witnesses and survivors to build dossiers on those they say are Iran’s most infamous human-rights abusers.

But just as the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center was ramping up to investigate abuses of protesters after this summer’s disputed presidential election, the group received word that - for the first time since it was formed - its federal funding request had been denied.

“If there is one time that I expected to get funding, this was it,’’ said Rene Redman, the group’s executive director, who had asked for $2.7 million in funding for the next two years. “I was sur prised, because the world was watching human rights violations right there on television.’’

Many see the sudden, unexplained cutoff of funding as a shift by the Obama administration away from high-profile democracy promotion in Iran, which had become a signature issue for President Bush. But the timing has alarmed some on Capitol Hill.

This is bad, very bad. It sends a message to the Ahmadinejad administration that we don't care what he does to his people who have taken to the streets in peaceful protest. We should not be fighting the battles of the people of Iran, but we ought to be PUBLICIZING THEM and WATCHING.

This is a huge mistake by the Obama administration, imo.

Just another example whose side PBO is really on. Either that, or he's a weak-kneed nutless coward.

Why is no one paying attention to this?

The O-bots aren't going to touch it and everyone else doesn't want to be called a, "hyper-partisan hack", for being honest.

or be called a racist.

I am beginning to believe that this is exactly what he is.

Aint it Congress that funds such things?

Not always.

I see, however cant congress go in and fund it.. as in, cant some Republican put the funds in an earmark in some bill like they always do?

So, it's going to be the Repub's fault for not backdoor funding the program, nevermind that it's Libbos that cut off the jack in the first place. Right?

No I am asking a question.

If this is so important, then why has no one in Congress from either side, not put money in an earmark long ago to make sure there is funding.. It is not like there was no warning on the lack of funding. If it is so important, then why has Congress not taken away the funding from State and control it themselves?

I mean Congress does not forget to earmark funds for Israel in whatever bill they choose, but they forget or refuse to fund Pro US Iranian dissidents.. does not make sense.

I agree. It defiantly does not make any sense, but the government doesn't do to much anymore than makes sense so not a big surprise.

I'm not sure, but it could possibly be a violation of The Logan Act to do so.

I said it once and I'll say it again. All world leaders pretend to hate each other to control their own people. Except Sadam I guess :p

Hey Peter, what you don't know your the one who has said many time you know how the US is run come on big boy you should know this basic fact correct. Oh thats right you don't know about the Logan Act nor any of the US Codes.

And why exactly should the US be peeping and interfering with the life in Iran? Have you sorted out all your domestic social problems and inadequacies? Why do you assume you have the right to meddle in other countries business?!

Because as the leaders of the free world, it's our job to cultivate freedom at every opportunity.

Because the present leadership supports rouge nations and International Terror Groups and has crack down on it's own population with murder and torture and a stolen election to just name a few reason.

1. And the US leadership doesn't?

2. and the US leadership doesn't crack down on it's own population with opressive laws, domestic policies that breed poverty and torture of foreigners in the name of US interests?

3. remind me please that story with "stolen" Bush elections?

Isn't it time the US power elites stopped holding US people for stoopid? If they are really concerned for the welfare of human species, why don't they start with their own country -- the US?

My guess is that the decision might have something to do with the resumption of negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. The Administration may believe that such a move would increase prospects for success in those negotiations and, as such, the net benefits would be positive given the stakes involved in the nuclear discussions.

Needless to say, it is not clear whether such a decision will actually increase prospects for a positive outcome. The work of the group in question was relatively peripheral compared to the actual interests involved in the nuclear discussions. I suspect the success or failure of the talks will rest strictly on whether the core needs/critical interests of the parties can reasonably be accommodated.

How on earth can the Logan act stop Congress funding such an organisation? Congress funds freaking Israel via earmarks!! So it is a no no to fund an organisation that is against the sitting Iranian government, but it is no problem to give billions to Israel..

Do you even know the Logan act? Is Congress not the ultimate authority of the USA?
