CHICAGO - The funeral of a Chicago teen who was beaten to death on his way home from school drew civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan on Saturday, both calling for an end to youth violence. <snip.>

My first thought was, "Free air-time for the good Rev."

My second thought was, "Oh great. This is going to be interesting to see how this is somehow all my fault." But I digress.

I read the article and my next thought was, "And just HOW do you propose to make these neighborhoods safe?" Demonize, rather than glorify, the gangsta mentality adopted in their communities? Censor rap? Vigilante style door to door clean-up? Require parental participation in the development of their off-spring. (Yeah, right. Would that even be a good idea in the given circumstances? I think it's the parent's fault to begin with.)

This notion of saving the children in these war zone neighborhoods is a very noble cause. But, I know both Jackson and Farrakan will be chasing Sharpton's coat-tails at another photo-op next week and this will be all but forgotten.

I wonder what changes should be made in our African American brother's neighborhoods that would make a noticable impact and improvement on the safety of their blessed children? And how could those changes be made?

This is a dire need and it can't be scapegoated any longer if these communities ever hope to have any sense of security in their homes. It is something they can only remedy themselves. No "government program" or entitlement is gonna fix this.

Does anyone have any positive ideas what we can do to help these people who need help? Any ideas on what they could do for themselves?

We will be measured by our weakest. These people need our help. But what can we do?

P.S. *** As a sidenote. Would YOU want to send your children to Chicago to participate in the Olympics?

It strikes me as nothing short of revolting that both Sharpton and Farrakhan are captilizing on a tragedy to enhance their media images.

On a side note, I didn't see them speaking out against youth violence when the white kid was beaten up on the bus by black kids.

Imagine if there was a white "Reverend Sharpton" and he spoke out about things like that. No wait, there was David Duke. Racist Alert! :rofl

It seemed like this might be a serious thread with some serious questions asked but very quickly it turns into jokes about death and race and ROFL, ugh.

Seriously?

They might as well piss on that kid's grave while they're at it. Their presence equates to about the same thing.

The two things that would have the largest impact are: 1) Ending the war on drugs. This would cause a huge decrease in violent crime overnight. 2) Implementing merit pay for teachers, and school vouchers. This would not have a noticeable impact for a few years, until those kids were of crime-committing age. But at that point I think it would have a very large effect.

Additional things that would help, albeit not as much as the two things I mentioned above: More cops on the streets in bad neighborhoods. Stiffer sentences for violent crimes, and lighter sentences for non-violent crimes (especially first offenses). Government-funded programs to treat drug addiction and alcoholism. And an end to the idiotic ban on federal college loans to people convicted of drug-related crimes.

more cops in rough neighborhoods would elicit charges of racism from the reverend and the minister

Of course it would. Fixing the problem is the last thing the so called black leaders want to do. The Civil Rights Industry is making millions off the brothers killing each other for apparent reason.

it is to bad the Jackson and Farrakhan do not use their influence to help these people

True, but the question was what changes can be made to help those neighborhoods, not what changes can be made that Jackson and Farrakhan would approve of.

thank you

sincerely, one of the first changes that could aid the situation is to shut up both the righteous reverend and mild minister

self help is always a good start when one is unhappy

but those who engage in trying to better themselves within our most suffering communities are often accused of selling out

way too many of our unhappiest neighbors and friends drop out of school, involve themselves in gangs, drugs and criminal activity, and get their girlfriends pregnant when they have no intention of sticking around

tragic

it's pretty hard to fix anything when such suicidal lifestyle choices are being made by so many

obama is uniquely positioned to talk to these kids

i've always felt he should have made a much higher priority of the question you and i ask

and his message could be a lot clearer and less mixed

in my opinion

Its something they can only remedy themselves? History shows us otherwise people will act appallingly if left to their own devices in rundown and poverty stricken areas.

People forget we are all decended from rapists and murderers. You need a consistent social system before you can expect peaceful suburbs. You cant just say there is a community when there isnt.

No that pair of miscreant bufoons only know how to behave lke ghools in a unguarded graveyard and a chance to get their useless mugs in the media.

Good points. So, what do you suggest? Who can fix this? How?

Well unforunately only a government led empowerment of the young people. There still will be lost generations however, its too late for the adults.Getting children into a educational and a loving environment as soon as possible even though it will be state led (which will be economically unsound and slow) should give children a chance above their useless parent.

I am not so sure that government entitlements and social welfare isn't actually a part of the problem. Would that not be like pouring gasoline on a fire?

I am of the opinion that personal responsibility coupled with community co-hesiveness, would serve the war-zone inhabitants better. For, until a community, or that is to say a collective mass living in close proximity, stands up for itself and says "enough" and takes personal responsibility, rather than subsidies, will it ever be able to sweep their own streets.

But if it takes martial law, so be it. It's better than the alternative I suppose.

I thought of one more to add to this list: Prison reform. People (especially minorities) who go to prison for minor crimes often come out hardened criminals. The conditions in an American prison are absolutely horrifying. I would sooner kill myself than spend a week inside one of them. In addition to the rampant sexual slavery that most people find so hilarious, there are race-based prison gangs. These provide "criminal education" to newcomers and encourage violence both inside and outside of prison. Furthermore, they promote racialist identities that undoubtedly make it more difficult for people who truly want to turn their lives around, but worry about "selling out" or "acting white."

I believe we should also label gangs that have a history of violence as terrorist groups and should be treated likewise.
