CHICAGO - The funeral of a Chicago teen who was beaten to death on his way home from school drew civil rights leader the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan on Saturday, both calling for an end to youth violence. <snip.>

My first thought was, "Free air-time for the good Rev."
My second thought was, "Oh great. This is going to be interesting to see how this is somehow all my fault." But I digress.
I read the article and my next thought was, "And just HOW do you propose to make these neighborhoods safe?" Demonize, rather than glorify, the gangsta mentality adopted in their communities? Censor rap? Vigilante style door to door clean-up? Require parental participation in the development of their off-spring. (Yeah, right. Would that even be a good idea in the given circumstances? I think it's the parent's fault to begin with.)
This notion of saving the children in these war zone neighborhoods is a very noble cause. But, I know both Jackson and Farrakan will be chasing Sharpton's coat-tails at another photo-op next week and this will be all but forgotten.
I wonder what changes should be made in our African American brother's neighborhoods that would make a noticable impact and improvement on the safety of their blessed children? And how could those changes be made?
This is a dire need and it can't be scapegoated any longer if these communities ever hope to have any sense of security in their homes. It is something they can only remedy themselves. No "government program" or entitlement is gonna fix this.
Does anyone have any positive ideas what we can do to help these people who need help? Any ideas on what they could do for themselves?
We will be measured by our weakest. These people need our help. But what can we do?
P.S. *** As a sidenote. Would YOU want to send your children to Chicago to participate in the Olympics?
