It was an environmentally sensitive move.
In one swift move he illustrated the left's level hypocrisy on the issue. Total.

A video of enthusiastic support would have been more fitting of POTUS.
But, Dr. Ego's ego got in the way.

Doesn't he have such brilliant judgment?

    I'm in awe.

However saying that, most media in the US and even in Europe have never understood the IOC. They are the ultimate old boys club, full of former and present royalty and political big wigs. So lobbying by famous people is their bread and butter.... it is never the actual facts of the bids that win the day.

And if you look at the different city's presentations as I did, it was pretty clear that Chicago and Tokyo would fall first since their passion for the games was no where to be seen during the presentation. During the Chicago presentation only Obama managed to drive some passion into a very average presentation.

On top of that, Chicago had some big issues with it. First off the Atlanta games. They are seen in a relative perspective, as a failure to live up to the Olympic passion. I have heard comments of Atlanta being more like a county fair than an Olympics. Secondly, Salt Lake City.. the corruption Olympics. It is not forgotten in the IOC by any means. Also the US has had more of its fair share of Olympics.. by far the most for any nation. And lastly, there was questions on the financing and some venues.

Tokyo was always the underdog, since it lacked the passion many IOC members want from the start. Plus a huge hurdle was and is Beijing as it was just held in Asia. No one doubted the financing nor technology aspects, but there was a clear lack of Olympic passion.

Madrid was also always one of the dark horses. Not only did it have 75+% of the venues already done and by far the best transportation system of the 4. On top of that it had the Samaranch factor.. you can not disregard the former Olympic Presidents pulling power in the IOC. But against Madrid... London 2012. Never since the rotation principle was put in place has a games gone to the same continent in consequent Olympics. This is a huge hurdle, even though on paper it was the best bid.

And finally the winner.. Rio. Biggest bonus... it is in South America, a place the Olympics never has been before and the IOC being a bunch of old conservative wankers who love a good "story", that would also be a huge hurdle to get over. Despite having the biggest budget and by far the biggest social problems on the ground, this factor in the end won the day.

Brazil and Rio have a very long way to go. Rio is crime infested, lacks a transportation system and many of the venues are still only a piece of paper. And to prove that Rio winning was based on a "good story" rather than facts.. Rio has to hire many cruise ships because there are not enough hotels in Rio...Rio had by far the least amount of hotel beds of all the candidate cities. The 14 billion dollars put a side.. will not be enough.
    very impressive analysis, thanks

it sounds like you know a lot more about the inner workings than does obama

It would be a greater honor to properly address the many issues already on his plate. He can run for mayor of Chicago on his own dime.
    Thank you

I'm sure that you wrote the same thing and felt the same way about Bush attending the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics right?

Oh....and before you try to argue otherwise, you can search my threads, I argued strongly against many of my left-wing friends that it was completely appropriate for Bush to attend the Olympics...and supported it.

If Obama had not of gone, he would have been the only head of State with a city being considered for the Olympics that would not have gone. PM of Tokyo, PM of Spain, and the Leader (I forget if his a Prime Minister or President) of Brazil all went to make their case to the IOC.

It's ironic that Chicago isn't corrupt enough to get the Olympics.

The Olympics is a trivial matter in the grand scheme. It's not worthy of the POTUS to go chasing trophies.

This guy and the press that treats him as The Messiah thought he was a shoe-in simply by his and his companions "star power" presence. It was a dumb move, but illuminating for a certain segment of the population. The Cult Leader got smacked.

Does he believe the PR machine and his teleprompter will get him through the day? Seems so. The speech was another in a litany of messages about Him.

POTUS has more serious things to spend his political capital on.
He must have believed his presence would have swayed the voted... LOL.

    He went.
    He spent.
    And lost.

What happened to the impeccable judgment he claimed to have on the trail?

Re: Chicago doesn't get 2016 Olympics

I live only an hour or so north of Chicago and I wouldn't have went to the Olympics if I had to do so in Chicago. What does that tell you?

Putting aside the fact that some of the coolest people I have ever met are from Chicago, and they truly love their town, I just never quite understood the attraction.

I know I have lived up here for only 20 years, but in that 20 years I do not ever recall a pleasant trip in, through or to, in Chicago. First thing is their annoying and expensive road extortion stations they commonly refer to as toll booths. Being from Wisconsin, and avoilding Chicago at all costs, I do not own a "Quick-Pass" therefore I have to go through the extortion booths.

And for what? So I can drive through an endless construction zone for 2 hours? And even when the traffic is flowing good, there are these non-stop street racers dipping, ducking, swerving and dodging other cars like they were orange cones on a proving ground.

    We won't mention the Bears.

I see NOTHING attractive about Chicago. In fact, the opposite is true. I find it to be very unattractive. It is no wonder it never made it out of the gate for the race to host the Olympics.

I'm absolutely CERTAIN that you said the same thing about GWB when he attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, right?

    Oh...that's right. Thought so.
