    Iran 'concealed nuclear facility'

Iran has been accused of concealing a second uranium enrichment plant in defiance of international calls for transparency over its nuclear plans.

The leaders of the US, UK and France demanded UN inspectors be given immediate access to the facility.

Iran revealed the existence of the plant to the UN watchdog on Monday, saying it was not yet operational and would only be used for nuclear energy.

Tehran has previously acknowledged it has one enrichment plant, at Natanz.

Iran's decision to build a secret facility represented a "direct challenge to the basic compact" of the global non-proliferation regime, US President Barack Obama said, making a statement in Pittsburgh, where he is hosting a G20 summit.

Despite Iran's assertions that the facility was for peaceful purposes, the new plant was "not consistent" with that goal, the US president said.

Speaking alongside UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Mr Obama said it was time for Iran to begin meeting its international commitments.

Iran has nuclear warhead plants in Tehran: exiled opposition

PARIS (AFP) – Iran's exiled opposition movement said Thursday it had learned of two previously unknown sites in and near Tehran that are being used to build nuclear warheads.

"Resistance sources have managed to uncover two centres that work directly on nuclear armaments and which were until now kept secret," Mehdi Abrihamtchi of the People's Mujahedeen told reporters in Paris, where his group is based.

"They are places for research and production of detonation systems which is a major part of the mullahs' atomic bomb project," he said, adding that his organisation had passed on the information to the UN atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Iran ranks 2nd in natural gas reserves and 3rd in oil reserves and Ahmedinejad is enriching uranium just for energy? I figure it's one of these two reasons. He is extremely worried about having a large carbon foot print burning all that oil and natural gas for energy [/sarcasm] or he's getting ready to blow a country up cough*Israel*.

One thing that ought to be seen in reports like this is that the United States has no idea what is going on inside Iran.

We missed the entire nuclear program until an Iranian dissident group told us, and now we are relying on Iran itself to reveal plants that we did not know existed? Our intelligence in regards to this country is apparently non-existent.

It also makes the question of air strikes even more bleak. If you have no idea what the Iranian capability is, and if there are more "secret sites," then you have no way of knowing in an air strike was successful or just a waste of time.

Or it could be the same reason that many countries want to get nukes, it is a deterrent from the U.S. invading them.

Which brings up an interesting question. Should the United States look at a relatively small nuclear arsenal as a real credible deterrent? Does, or should, the possession of nuclear weapons automatically equate to being treated on a different field than otherwise might be the case?

What? We don't go around the ME just invading countries and overthrowing governments. Pffft, that's crazy talk.
