Stimulus funds boost number of federal jobs

    By Matt Kelley, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON ó The $787 billion economic recovery package also is stimulating growth in the federal government as agencies hire thousands of workers and spend millions of dollars to oversee and implement the package, according to government records and spokesmen.
Fourteen of the top federal agencies responsible for spending under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act say they've hired about 3,000 workers with stimulus money. That's helped fuel the continued growth of the federal government, which increased by more than 25,000 employees, or 1.3%, since December 2008, according to the latest quarterly report. During that time, the ranks of the nation's unemployed increased by nearly 4 million, Labor Department statistics show.

Overall, there are about 2 million federal workers, the data show.

Thirteen agencies that report stimulus-related administrative expenses separately on their weekly spending reports say they've spent $186.8 million so far on salaries and other overhead. Those agencies have reported spending $46.1 billion in stimulus funds overall.

Looks like Obama is just a little short of his promise to create 3,500,000 new jobs.... like about 3,475,000 short, but what the heck, it only cost us $787,000,000,000.

I don't know about you, but I'm impressed!

Yea but you forgot that he was going to create or SAVE 1 to 2 million jobs. He must have saved a lot of jobs. Obviously, not any of those 4 million that lost their jobs, but possibley some others.

We did not need to spend almost a trillion dollars in a stimulus for that to occur. Economies go in cycles, and this recession is no different. Except this go round have spent trillions (between Republican and Democratic Admins) in some vain attempt to not let the economy do what it has to do to continue with real growth.

You mean the loss of jobs has slowed down?... except in government of course?

So where are all the new jobs?.... except in government, of course.

That is not progress, that is the headlong plunge hitting bottom.

They're lower because unemployed workers are falling off the back-end of the unemployment insurance cycle. Mass layoffs went up 24% from July. The CBO predicts 2.3 million jobs will be lost next year. It may be progress for the Libbo agenda, but not for the rest of us.

Yes, this bush recession sure is a bitch isnít it?
The haggardness of poverty is everywhere seen contrasted with the sleekness of wealth, the exhorted labor of some compensating for the idleness of others, wretched hovels by the side of stately colonnades, the rags of indigence blended with the ensigns of opulence; in a word, the most useless profusion in the midst of the most urgent wants.Jean-Baptiste Say

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the official start of the current recession was December of 07.President Bush was in office for around six years when the recission started …so connecting the dots, tells me that is was caused by something he did. More than likely cutting taxes while fighting two wars.
