Pelosi to Offer New Draft of Health Care Bill Next Week - Political News - FOXNews.com

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi intends to present a unified, redrafted health care reform bill next week, the head of the House Democratic Caucus said Wednesday.

Chairman John Larson said the new bill would meld together parts of legislation written and approved in July by the House Education, Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce committees. But Larson cautioned against people reading this as the last step in a long health care journey for the House.

"That won't be the final answer," said Larson of Connecticut. "This is the refining process."

There continues to be a lot of back-and-forth between varying wings of the Democratic caucus. The most-liberal factions are pushing for the so-called "public option," a federal health insurance plan that would be made available to people who are uninsured. But some conservative Democrats are bucking that idea, preferring to limit the scope of the plan.

The lengthy, behind-the-scenes negotiations have left many scratching their heads as to how Pelosi will secure the necessary votes to pass the bill without alienating at least one branch of her caucus.

"You should be the head of the caucus," Larson responded when asked if he thought the status of the legislation was hard to track. "I can't quite get a feel for where we're going to go. Every day reveals a new wrinkle or nuance."

Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer have recently underscored their support for government-operated insurance, a position that has created some consternation among the moderate and conservative "Blue Dog" Democrats in the House.

"There was quite a bit of dismay," Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota said about reaction from the Blue Dogs to the apparent push for an government-run option. "We sort of feel like we're getting mixed messages."

Herseth Sandlin, one of the Blue Dog leaders, said she didn't think Pelosi and Hoyer had the votes to pass a health care reform package without the help of moderate Democrats.

"If the leadership feels they have the votes for H.R. 3200 (the health care reform bill), then they don't need to negotiate (with us) and bring this to a vote," Herseth Sandlin said. "Right now I don't think they have the votes to pass H.R. 3200."

Oh Please will someone just tell her and her lacky Rep. Hoyer to just drop it. The Funny thing is Rep. Sandlin one of the leading Blue Dogs is correct if they had the votes then why are they even talking with both the Blue Dogs and Moderates in the Democrat Party. Or better yet if they feel they could get it passed then why not call for the vote right now.

The same goes for Sen. Reid either call for a vote or drop it all together the bottom line is that We The People don't want this no matter hopw much they think they know best.

I can't wait to see this. It's gonna be good.

Uhh why would they call a vote before the legislation is ready?

Don't want what? There are at least five different health care bills.

HR3200 they claim that they have the votes so let see them

The Senate certainly doesn't have the votes for anything nearly as comprehensive as HR3200. And Pelosi is not going to make her colleagues put their necks on the line until the Senate is ready to go. Why vote on HR3200 if the final House-Senate compromise bill is unlikely to resemble HR3200?

Why not she is the one pushing this so hard a few weeks ago She was saying it would pass, so it's time for her and the rest of the Democrat to put their money where their mouth's are. lets have the vote and see what happens or is to much of a coward.

Not yet, but soon. There are three versions of the bill, b/c three different committees voted on it. That's why a unified version must be drafted to be voted on.

And, she needs to strengthen up that public option! She watered it down in a deal with the Blue Dogs on Waxman's committee, but they came back from Aug break saying they weren't voting on it, so their deal is history.

Robust public option!

HR3200 is what Nancy Pelosi wants. The Senate Finance Committee Bill is what Max Baucus wants. Neither of them is going to get everything they want and there will be some sort of compromise. They understand that, but that doesn't mean they still can't push for their own version.

And it probably WILL pass in the House. But last I checked, we have two houses of Congress, and the other one is not ready to go yet.

Why are you in such a hurry?
