The Associated Press: Budget chief contradicts Obama on Medicare costs

Congress' chief budget officer is contradicting President Barack Obama's oft-stated claim that seniors wouldn't see their Medicare benefits cut under a health care overhaul.

The head of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, Douglas Elmendorf, told senators Tuesday that seniors in Medicare's managed care plans would see reduced benefits under a bill in the Finance Committee.

The bill would cut payments to the Medicare Advantage plans by more than $100 billion over 10 years.

Elmendorf said the changes would reduce the extra benefits that would be made available to beneficiaries.

Whatever we end up doing with health care, we need to realize that everyone cannot get everything they want.

you can't win squat in american politics without solid senior support

obamacare is dead

thanks for the info, it's HUGE

cbo is the arbiter, elmendorf's the mathematician

there's never any arguing with them, their word is bottom line

I don't even think that is the issue; it is the notion that we can all get something for nothing which is what Obama is attempting to argue.

It is beyond stupid to see any President claim that he can insure an additional 45 million citizens and illegals and save so much through well managed reform efforts that the costs will be offset by savings; in other words, deficit neutral and not requiring vast new taxes to pay for it all.

any body else love it when this kind of thing happens with in a bad administration

I would laugh if it were not such a serious effort to destroy, in my opinion, what is a great nation of citizens who pride in their independence.

I'm so excited too! The choice between no health insurance or overpriced health insurance prevails!

Better than the thrid choice: going broke paying for the most massive entitlement program in history.

If PBO wasn't killing jobs at a record rate, there wouldn't be so many people without insurance. But, everyone working an making money would defeat the Leftist agenda quicker than anything. Can't control the population if they're financially independent from the government.

if obama can really cut a half billion medicare dollars by trimming waste, fraud and abuse, then why does he need a comprehensive reform bill to do so?

what's he waiting for?

why not secure the savings now?

This is why the public option must be open to all citizens or we need to enact single payer and just dismantle the private health care insurance industry altogether. If we just open medicare to all, then it offsets the costs of those who are older. Plus, the CBO is wrong in that the stuff being considered for cuts is the fat that needs trimming off of medicare. I thought conservatives would be for getting rid of waste. Oh well. Seems that no matter what this congress does, conservatives will be up in arms about it.

It requires stunning level of willful denial to believe that ANYTHING the Government manages does not lead to waste, OR, that the Government can eliminate waste within Government run programs.

History is not kind to those who profess such absurdities; particularly the lie being spewed by Obama and his Administration that they are going to find so much waste, the program will almost pay for itself; that is truly laughable.

:doh

tell it to kent conrad, claire mccaskill, difi, jay rockefeller, ben nelson, bill nelson, blanche lincoln, mary landrieu, byron dorgan, harry reid, mike ross, the bluedogs, the cbo, dem gubs bill richardson, christine gregoire, phil bredesen, bill ritter, freshmen kratovil, perriello, progressives woolsey, waters...

You do realize that there are MULTIPLE bills being tossed around right now correct? Holy cow, you'd think that just because 1 of XX bills was talked about this way that it's somehow a victory for those who are against reform during this presidency. Congratulations (I guess), now you just have all the other bills to go after.

But clearly you are of the opinion that Obama supports the bill that, wait which one was denounced, oh yeah that one, he supports that bill!

Simmer down people, simmer down.

baucus is just one bill

LOLOL!

hr3200---just a bill

LOL!

So your response is a bunch of acronyms indicating laughter? Forgive me if I don't take you seriously from now on.

Seriously, Baucus' bill was rated poorly and now the entire project should be scrapped and started over? Of course you never bothered to think of the possibility that it might have been rated higher or lower depending on if they included what the more liberal democrats actually wanted instead of the piecemeal plan that Baucus released. That of course wouldn't fit into your predetermined judgment of their ideas.

In this thread the Obama bashers will take the side of Medicare Advantage.

A government program that costs tax payers 14% more per patient than regular Medicare.

Nothing Obama can do will please these folks.

So ignore them.

Good idea. That way, when Medicare's outlays surpass its receipts (already started) and when it exhausts its trust fund, (scheduled to happen in 2017), the entire country's health care will suffer, not just that of old people. So long as we're in this together, it's okay.

Since medicare is going to flop, does that mean I can stop paying into it?

from now on?

you USED TO take me seriously?

LOL!

the whole world was worriedly waiting for 6 months for the GATEKEEPER

from day one, the whole thing was gonna come down to senate finance

and when baucus finally broke with baited breath his over-busied bill, he stood all alone

not a single democrat and not even olympia snowe would be seen beside beleagured baucus at his puffed up presser

you suggest that i never thought (LOL!) about the possibility of baucus going over better had he listened to his left?

LOLOLOL!

EVERYONE's tried EVERYTHING

left, right, up, down, forward, backward, center and spin

NOTHING works

ask conrad, ask cbo, ask a dozen senators, ask difi, ask the governors, ask the dogs

heck, even the FRESHMEN will tell you

haven't you been watching?

the president overreached

by a light year

my predetermined judgement---LOLOLOL!---has nothing to do with anything

piecemeal?

baucus?

with all due respect, you don't know what you're talking about

and seriously, sir, you're cracking me up

LOL!

conrad, dorgan, landrieu, nelson, nelson, difi, lincoln and a dozen others "take the side of medicare advantage"

not to mention, cbo

and the 20 million members of the medicare plan in the crosshairs of the president's scope

should obama ignore them?

One could almost get the idea that's it's all a deliberate set of actions.

But I'm sure that's absurd.

There's no doubt it's a deliberate set of actions.

PBO isn't killing jobs at a record rate, he has been stemming the bleeding from the Bush term:

You can prove this? Remember:

Sure, three words, "cap and trade". It's been proven that it will cost more jobs. Obviously, the mere threat of the bill's passage is killing jobs. And, it's true, unless you can provide some proof that PBO's plans have created jobs. We all know the answer to that query. Don't we?
