Obama open to newspaper bailout bill

The president said he is "happy to look at" bills before Congress that would give struggling news organizations tax breaks if they were to restructure as nonprofit businesses.

"I haven't seen detailed proposals yet, but I'll be happy to look at them," Obama told the editors of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade in an interview.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) has introduced S. 673, the so-called "Newspaper Revitalization Act," that would give outlets tax deals if they were to restructure as 501(c)(3) corporations. That bill has so far attracted one cosponsor, Cardin's Maryland colleague Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D).

So now the biased media gets to be tax exempt? What makes them different than any other business in this country, that they're becoming antiquated? Technology is making the newspapers obsolete. The Federal government is yet again supporting failure rather than embracing change, rather strange for this administration. Then again, maybe not so strange considering 95% of the MSM is in Obama's corner anyway.

Uhh Obama said he'd be "happy to look at" the bill, not that he was giving total unqualified support to such an idea.

That sounds like a polite way of saying that he doesn't think this bill is actually going to go anywhere. I agree that newspapers should not be bailed out...and I highly doubt that Congress has the stomach to seriously take up this cause anyway.

There is something very dirty about the government being involved in newspapers this way.

Besides that i think government money invested this way should be made through the idea of a bounce back happening at some point and i dont see this happening with newspapers.

Lets allow them to die peacefully that inject them with drugs and electric every last breath out of them.

Newsflash. The internet was invented. One day papers will only be bought for Sunday coupons.

Newspapers do have several advantages over the Internet.
A man cannot successfully wrap the daily garbage in the Internet as he can with newspapers.
Newspapers make great kindling for starting fires ( heating the water and the home). The Internet does not burn that well, usually.
I can swat a fly with a newspaper; can anyone do the same with the Internet ?

Then why talk about it if he is not giving such an idea support?
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    I hope you're right.
