    California Joblessness Reaches 70-Year High

It looks like California is in deep trouble. What do you think, have they hit bottom? They claim the unemployment in California is high because of the housing bubble. That sounds overly simplistic, and perhaps deceptive to me. I suspect there are some reasons that the NY Times would rather not mention.

    Any thoughts?

    California Joblessness Reaches 70-Year High

LOS ANGELES — California’s unemployment rate in August hit its highest point in nearly 70 years, starkly underscoring how the nation’s incipient economic recovery continues to elude millions of Americans looking for work.

While job losses continue to fall, the state’s new unemployment rate — 12.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics — is far above the national average of 9.7 percent and places California, the nation’s most-populous state, fourth behind Michigan, Nevada and Rhode Island. Statistics kept by the state show California’s unemployment rate was 14.7 percent in 1940, said Kevin Callori, a spokesman for the California Employment Development Department. While California has convulsed under the same blows as the rest of the country over the last two years, its exposure to both the foreclosure crisis and the slowdown in construction — an industry that has fueled growth in much of the state over the last decade — has been outsized.

Note: California statistics before 1976 are not official.
    Not real helpful there, guys.

I gotta say it's pretty slim pickings in san diego these days. I've seen a few business moving toward east county where land gets cheaper.

This, of course, barely skims the actual level - which the Labor Department knows full and well they aren't catching.

I know a few tricks, such as counting some people as 'in the work force' just because they've run out of unemployment checks, or if school starts back up again (because everyone knows, teenagers can't go to work and school), while their counting of illegal immigrants is - obviously - fragmented at best.

If someone told me this state's joblessness was fifteen percent, or even twenty, I wouldn't be that suprised.

add the housing bubble with the welfare state California created, than the job losses because Cali is running a deficit, and a host of other reasons why the 'idealistic wet dream of leftists america failed,' and now you know why Cali failed

and why many on the right are worried about the changes going on in america

why doesnt't Barry Fix cali with his plans to show the americans it can and will work

instead he chose to cram it down our throats in a spirit of urgency, and instead of getting everything he wanted, he has gotten nothing. Even dems are turning against his healthcare reform, or somebodies healthcare reform. whose healthcare reform are we debating, there are so many out htere. That is fatal flaw #1 for them.

if one wants to make Fundamental Changes to the American Fabric, for the benefit of the people, one must be able to Articulate it.
The teleprompter reading, articulate empty vessel has failed that

but hey, the EU and Turkey love him and so do terrorist regimes, so the trade off seems good
