Massachusetts Governor Says White House Pressing for Quick Kennedy Replacement - Political News - FOXNews.com

RICHMOND, Mass. -- Gov. Deval Patrick said Friday that President Barack Obama had personally talked to him about changing the Senate succession law in Massachusetts, and White House aides were pushing for him to gain the power to temporarily replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy amid the administration's health care push.

A month after a White House spokesman labeled the issue a state matter, Patrick said he and Obama spoke about changing the law as they both attended Kennedy's funeral in Boston last month. He also said White House aides have been in contact frequently ever since and pushing for the change so they can regain their filibuster-proof majority in the U.S. Senate.

"He and his whole team have been very clear about that," Patrick told reporters after holding a Cabinet meeting near his Berkshire Mountains vacation home.

"It's out there that the Senate president and the (House) speaker are trying to figure out whether this can be accomplished, and he fully understands, as do his aides, who I have talked to more about it, the importance of having the support for a change agenda down in Washington," Patrick added.

The governor spoke just moments after Republicans in the Massachusetts Senate temporarily blocked a bill allowing Patrick to name an interim appointment.

This sis so wrong in so many ways it's hard to start, First the President is wading into a State Issue violating the 10th Adm second typical Kennedy BS if this isn't Political hackery then what is. First he got the Law change so then Gov. Romney could appoint someone if Mr. Kerry was elected the President now he wants it change so he can have a Democrat Govn selected his replacement. My hope is that someone in Mass. has the Balls to step up and tell The White House to stay the hell out of our 10th Adm. Rights and a Republican from Mass threatens to go to the United States Court to stop this BS.

I think all those new-england mini-states should be conglomerated into a single, normal-sized state

Way to go off topic care to make a comment about the OP, oh and you really don't know much about the size of both Maine and Mass.

how so? I believe I do.

But anyway, for the most part I agree with you...wasn't really trying to derail.

It doesn't surprise me that the president is getting involved in this, and I don't see it as a violation of the 10th unless he's trying to force action...considering the governor, I don't think obama feels that he has to...Hopefully the mass. legislature will stand up to the outside interference and pressure from the governor... but I won't be surprised if they cave. Politics is politics--majory hackery.

The whole conglomeration thing was really a joke, but if it actually became an issue (which it wouldn't) I would support it, just to cut back on the number of senators (ie. hackery) emmanating from the elected officials of this particular corner of the nation.

Ah but you forget we Mainers told Massholes to take a flying leap back in 1819 and became a State in 1820 so it would never work beside who would really want to have Vermount has part of your State

...good point.

Alright, I'll make that concession for Maine, which is not really that small... You are the vanguard against canada, so should remain strong and independent (but be alert! you're surrounded on all sides!). :)

You mean about that crook Obama trying to have the Gov of MA break the law so he can have his filibuster proof Senate?

Obama should wait until the people in Massachusetts choose the replacement. Its not like they would after so many years voting for a rat lib are suddenly going to change their minds and vote for a republican let alone a conservative. I support the people's right to pick replacements regardless of who they would pick. The "Oh the whitehouse is pressuring us" is just a lame excuse for the Massachusetts Governor to try to con the state senate into going along with letting him screw the people out of their right to choose a replacement.

My vote goes with the folks from the South Side of Boston because we all know those folks in the North Side would never stoop to something that low

It's shady, but it's definitely not a violation of the 10th Amendment.

He wants him to change it, not break it.
